Mechanics

Starting with the fourth train, every other train will be a so-called chaos train.

Battle carriage

Immediately upon entering the carriage, you enter a fight. This can generally be any fight you would also encounter in New Wirral—including Ranger Captains and Archangels. On top of that, you may encounter Partners and other named NPCs that you would normally not be able to fight.

Each fight is annotated with a challenge level. The challenge level depends on the encounter (see table below). In non-chaos trains, all generated encounters are shuffled and then re-ordered by challenge level. This means that the encounter difficulty generally increases with the carriage number, and resets once a new train is entered. In chaos trains, re-ordering step is skipped, leading to a completely random progression in challenge level.

Partial Encounters

Partial encounters are accompanied by a second partial encounter with the same difficulty[1]. Especially in the later carriages, there is a lower chance of meeting partial encounters[2].

Minibosses

Every 8th non-café carriage is a miniboss fight. These fights have a challenge level that is generally 1 higher than preceding fights, though there are exceptions[3].

Bosses

Carriage #50 of every train is a boss carriage, where you fight against one of three bosses.

Levels

The enemy level starts at Lv50, independent of difficulty. For every visited carriage before the current one, the enemy level increases by 1. Since the first carriage is always a café carriage, the earliest possible encounter will start at Lv51 in carriage #2. Every miniboss or boss carriage has its level raised by 10, though this increase only applies to that carriage.

Partial

In general, the partial Archangel encounters are the same as the full ones, with the following exceptions:

  • Nowhere Monarch cannot show up as a partial encounter[6].
  • Poppetox cannot show up as a partial encounter[6].
  • Lenna and Shadow Lenna show up on their own, without Paige/Delvin.
  • Morgante, when in a partial encounter, uses a significantly debuffed Coda Morgana move. Its power is decreased from 9999999 to 300, turning it from a OHKO move to a strong team-wide attack that can be survived even without the use of walls.
  • An Orb Fusion shows up on its own, without the accompanying monster.

  2. This is due to details of the train generation. Partial encounters take their partners from the list of generated partial encounters after them, and if there is no partial encounter that matches the rules, the incomplete partial encounter is discarded and replaced by a generic monster or rogue fusion fight.
  3. This largely depends on the details of the train generation. In non-chaos trains, it's safe to assume the challenge level will be between 0 and 2 levels higher than preceding ones. The challenge level in chaos trains is entirely dependent on RNG.
  4. 4.0 4.1 As of version 1.7, Diogenes' tapes 3, 4, and 5 are locked behind no difficulty, difficulty 2, and difficulty 4, respectively. This is different from all other generic NPCs (which use difficulties 1/3/5 as conditions) and may hence be left over from difficulty adjustments during development.
  5. As of version 1.7, Mardiusa actually appears twice in the cultists' spawn profile, making it twice as likely to appear compared to all other tapes. Whether this is deliberate or by accident is hard to decide without official feedback.
