Archangels are a mysterious yet powerful race of eldritch beings that usually stay beneath the Mer-Line stations of New Wirral. Hunting them is necessary to complete Morgante's "Land of Confusion" Quest.

History

According to Kayleigh, when the first people washed up on New Wirral, the term "angels" were given to the monsters, while "Archangels" were the given to the eldritch entities due to the term meaning "highest rank of angels". While monsters lost their original "angel" title after it was revealed they could be beaten, "Archangel" still stayed around.[1]

At the end of the game, Aleph reveals that Archangels are egregores created from humanity's desires, such as greed, adventures, wars, even extinction events. In return for giving them life, the Archangels would travel to a random world and act out whatever they were created from, usually bringing untold deviation unto the world, as shown with the Dead World.[2]

After the player and their partners defeat Aleph Null, Ms. Amber mentions that because Archangels are formed from ideas even if they are killed they can reform as long as the idea they formed from still persists.[3]

After the player defeats her in battle, Lenna reveals that Archangels can take on a human form.[4]

  1. "Archangels... Supposedly, when the first unlucky sods washed up on the shores of New Wirral, they thought the monsters here were angels. And, and some of them wrote of other entities too, greater than the others... Creatures that look and feel "wrong". Logically, they called these other creatures "Archangels" - the highest ranking among the order of angels. Of course, when people learned they could fight and defeat the regular monsters, they lost their "angelic allure". They've had a bunch of names over the years - angels, demons, devils, ghouls... We just call them monsters now. It's a good catch-all term. Those other creatures, though... Like the one we fought... They're still Archangels to us. We don't know what they are." - Kayleigh
  2. "MY OLD CREW AND I HAD SOMETHING OF AN ARRANGEMENT WITH YOUR LOT. A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP. EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW IT. I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR YOU HUMANS! WITHOUT YOU WE WOULDN'T EXIST! YOU HUMANS LIVE ON YOUR LITTLE WORLDS AND YOU INVENT ALL THESE CUTE IDEAS. LOVE, DEATH, WHATEVER... YOUR MOST POWERFUL THOUGHTS WOULD BRING US TO LIFE, AND IN RETURN WE'D TRAVEL TO YOUR WORLDS TO ACT OUT WHATEVER FANTASIES YOU CONCOCTED FOR US! ADVENTURES... WARS... EXTINCTION EVENTS... YOU PEOPLE LOVE THAT STUFF THE MOST, AND SO DO I!" - Aleph
  3. "Folks like Aleph and I ain't flesh and blood, sugar. It takes an idea to die for us not to be able to come back in some form. He runs on conquest. If you humans keep findin' ways to kill each other, I'm sure he'll reform eventually. Though he might be out of action for quite some time..." - Ms. Amber
  4. "I am [an Archangel]. Well, I used to be. I guess I still am. It's a long story. I'm living as a human now, though. ... Why not? We're not bound by our origins - it doesn't matter who we used to be, it only matters who we choose to be in the present." - Lenna
  5. "But for him to slay his own kin that fateful day... I should hate him for it - I know the old witch did. But I cannot... conflict and domination were in his nature." - Gwen

"yep the intention is that the "round table" Archangels (from Aleph's generation) are a lot more "stable" visually, because they've existed for longer and had more time to "solidify" so to speak" - samuri (Jay Baylis).
