These are Eugene's dialogues.
Intro
- Angry Guy: ...Don’t make me tell you again! Harbourtown won’t fall to you blood suckers!
- Pale Man: Tsk. So unreasonable...
- Angry Guy: Crawl back to the darkness you came from – or you’ll have to go through me!
- Angry Guy: I’ve fought your kind before and won. Do you want a demonstration?
- Pale Man: We shall leave for now...
- Pale Man: But in time you shall understand that we know what is best for you all.
- Eugene: Tell the rest of your kind that this town is protected by Eugene!
(The Landkeepers leave. Eugene now addresses an old woman.)
- Eugene: Let me know if those creeps bother you again, ma’am.
- Eugene: And whatever you do, DON’T invite them into your house. That’s what they want.
- Woman: I will keep that in mind. Thank you for intervening, young man!
(The old woman leaves. Eugene now addresses the player.)
- Eugene: Oh, hey. Sorry you had to see that.
- Eugene: The name’s Eugene… Which I guess you know, ‘cause I just yelled it at those guys.
(The player can only respond with "I'm <player>!")
- Eugene: Always nice to meet a new face around here, <player>.
(Choice between "Who were those people?" and "What was that all about?")
- Eugene: I won’t trouble you with the details – but they don’t belong in this world.
- Eugene: Let's just say that not all the monsters in New Wirral look like cereal mascots.
- Eugene: Anyway, I gotta go stake out those guys. I can’t risk them sinking their teeth into the good people of Harbourtown.
(Choice between "Can I help?" and "Do you need some assistance?")
- Eugene: If you’re willing to get your hands dirty, I’d be glad to have you assist!
- Eugene: Meet me at this location. I’ll give you the full low-down when you’re there.
- Eugene: Just… prepare yourself for a throwdown. Things might get kinda ugly.
Acting On Your Best Behaviour
First Landkeeper Office
- Eugene: Glad you turned up!
- Eugene: Are you ready to take on the forces of evil?
(Choice between "Sure!" and "Not now.")
- If chosen "Sure!":
- Eugene: Momentous!
- Eugene: Alright, do you see that building over there?
- Eugene: That’s a stronghold – it’s where these inhuman parasites form their dark plots to take over this world.
(Choice between "It doesn’t look that impressive." and "It looks a bit plain, doesn’t it?")
- Eugene: Looks can be deceiving, buddy.
- Eugene: Their kind once plagued the world I came from, but we fought back. We WON.
- Eugene: There are a few of these strongholds – you might have seen them around. They lock the front doors, but we can drop in through a window on the roof.
- Eugene: Try gliding over from here – I’ll be by your side, don’t worry about it.
(Eugene is unlocked as a partner.)
- Eugene: I nabbed the window key from one of those ghouls while they were patrolling.
- Eugene: We’re gonna drop right on in there and flush them out – you ready?
(Choice between "Born ready!" and "Let's do this!")
(Inside the Landkeeper Office.)
- Eugene: We’re taking down your operation, you leeches!
- Pale Man: You are being very uncooperative, young man.
- Pale Man: Why don't you... listen to our sales pitch?
(Choice between "Sales pitch? Wait, what is this?" and "Did he just say 'sales pitch'?")
- Eugene: … What do you mean?
(Choice between "I thought they were… Vampires." and "Didn’t you heavily imply that they’re vampires?")
- Eugene: They are vampires!
- Eugene: Well, in a manner of speaking...
- Eugene: I'd say they're WORSE than vampires...
- Eugene: They're estate agents!
- Landkeeper: The Landkeeper’s Association simply wants to formulate a long-term housing market within New Wirral.
- Landkeeper: If you buy in now, you can make a significant profit from any future arrivals who will need housing.
- Landkeeper: Since New Wirral has no currency, we even have a promising repossession scheme in development.
- Eugene: I’ve heard enough! Harbourtown will never be bought out by your kind!
- Eugene: <player>...
- Eugene: Are you ready?
(Choice between "Let’s show them what we’re made of!" and "Uh, I guess so!")
(The Landkeepers are defeated in combat.)
- Landkeeper: Market growth is inevitable. WE are inevitable.
(The Landkeepers retreat.)
- Eugene: A small victory, but there’s more work to be done.
(Choice between "Are you sure they’re really that bad?" and "They don’t sound that dangerous…")
- Eugene: These “Landkeepers” seek to profit off of our collective misery!
- Eugene: I don’t know how they got here…
- Eugene: But I intend to stop them, as the defender of Harbourtown!
(The player can only respond with "Do you want some help with that, 'defender of Harbourtown'?")
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: Some help would be appreciated, yeah.
- Eugene: Keep your eyes peeled for the other strongholds, and listen up for rumours when you're in town.
- Eugene: Also, take this.
(Eugene gives the window key to the player.)
- Eugene: You can open the roof windows on your own now.
- If chosen "Not now.":
- Eugene: I understand. Let me know when you’re ready – I’ll keep assessing the situation until then.
Other Landkeeper offices
(In the second Landkeeper office.)
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: We won’t allow you to buy out New Wirral!
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: Excuse us for dropping in!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: Huh… Where did these creeps get all this stuff, anyway?
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: I’m appreciating the aesthetic here. Very “soul-crushing salary job”.
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: Your foul machinations end here, fiends!
- Landkeeper: Such short-sightedness you young people possess... Can’t you appreciate the investment opportunities we could open up for you?
(After battle.)
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: We really showed those agents, huh? Eugene will be pleased!
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: Alright, nice work! Maybe these parasites will start to realise who they’re messin’ with!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: Those guys are seriously trying to buy out New Wirral? I certainly don’t feel bad about beating them up, that’s for sure.
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: Those guys are definitely bad news. Let’s hope they don’t come back here anytime soon.
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: Those fiends spoke quickly, but fled quicker.
- If current partner is Barkley:
- The Landkeepers fled...
(In the third Landkeeper office.)
- Landkeeper: If you don’t vacate immediately, we’ll be forced to evict you ourselves...
(After battle.)
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: Another office cleared out! Nice teamwork, <player>!
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: Another office liberated from those creeps! Nice work, <player>!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: I am glad that punching those guys really hard is considered a public service.
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: How did those creepy estate agent guys even build a place like this?
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: They truly are unearthly types, are they not?
(In the fourth Landkeeper office.)
- Landkeeper: As prospective tenants, it is in your best interests to remain on good terms with the Landkeeper’s Association.
- Landkeeper: You wouldn’t want to be cast out of your homes, would you?
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: That sounds like a threat to me…
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: If you think you’re taking anything from us, you might want to re-evaluate!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: That’s a pretty dark thing to say.
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: We’re going all out with the veiled threats, I see.
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: Your blood must run cold if you could dispense such threats without hesitation.
(After battle.)
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: Eugene will be happy to hear we sent these clowns packing!
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: They didn’t stand a chance!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: Another office sorted out! I’m sure Eugene will appreciate us doing his job for him.
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: They ran out of here pretty quickly, huh? Maybe they realised they were totally outmatched.
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: I am glad to see those fiends gone.
(In the fifth Landkeeper office.)
- Landkeeper: New Wirral would experience such growth with a regulated housing market in place!
- Landkeeper: There is no need to fight progress!
(After battle.)
- Landkeeper: Perhaps you’d be interested in speaking to our manager at the Association Headquarters?
- Landkeeper: Maybe we can reach a mutually beneficial agreement there. I shall give you the location.
(The Landkeepers leave.)
- If current partner is Kayleigh:
- Kayleigh: Was that the last office cleared out? Let’s hope they don’t come back!
- If current partner is Eugene:
- Eugene: The Landkeepers have a central base of operations?!
- Eugene: This is our chance to put a stop to them once and for all!
- Eugene: C’mon, we haven’t got a moment to waste!
- If current partner is Meredith:
- Meredith: Oh, was this the last office that needed sorting out? Is this whole thing over, then?
- If current partner is Felix:
- Felix: C’mon, let’s get out of here! This was the last office building you needed to sort out, right?
- If current partner is Viola:
- Viola: I care not for those fiends. I am sure they will live to regret treating us with such hostility.
(If Eugene is not the active partner, the player is directed to speak to him. Upon switching, the conditional dialogue above plays and the quest continues normally.)
Landkeeper HQ
- Eugene: This is supposedly the location of the Landkeeper's Headquarters...
- Eugene: Alright - these creeps are no match for our burning resolve!
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: Where the hell is the entrance anyway?
(Entrance to HQ opens.)
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: I think I found the entrance.
(Inside the HQ. Landkeepers speak as you walk further into the HQ.)
- Landkeepers: NO FIXED-RATE MORTGAGES…
- Landkeepers: INCREASING EQUITY...
- Landkeepers: ADJUSTABLE MARKET CAP RATES...
- Landkeepers: CAPITAL GROWTH...
(Landkeepers and Mammon are revealed from the darkness.)
- Mammon: Thank you for arriving at our scheduled meeting. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
- Eugene: So you’re behind this, huh?
- Eugene: So tell me: Why would an Archangel try to take over the property market?!
- Mammon: My kin are born of humanity’s ego. The strongest desires of your kind give us form. I exist as tribute to mankind’s consumption. I want order because you do. I crave structure because you do.
- Eugene: ...
- Mammon: I want what you want, Human Eugene. I can read your heart.
- Eugene: You don’t know a SINGLE thing about me.
- Mammon: I sympathise with the Human Eugene. The Human Eugene finds no value in themselves outside of their cause.
- Mammon: Without a cause, the Human Eugene is nothing. A hollow shell. Just like my agents.
- Eugene: I...
- Eugene: That's not... true...
(Choice between "Don't listen to it, Eugene!" and "It's wrong!")
- Eugene: STOP!
- Eugene: I'm not listening any longer!
- Eugene: You won't crush my spirit! That's all your kind knows how to do!
- Eugene: Some bigwig comes along, tries to take everything from the little guy...
- Eugene: And then when the little guy fights back, they're told not to step out of line, right?!
- Eugene: So they don't do anything... And things just get worse!
- Eugene: It's the same old story!
- Eugene: <player>...
- Eugene: Wanna burn down this pile of junk?
(Choice between "You know I do." and "Let's do it.")
(Mid-battle against Mammon.)
- Eugene: You're not gonna crush my spirit...
- Eugene: And you won't stop <player> so easily either!
- Eugene: We'll take you on together, and we'll WIN!
(After Mammon is defeated.)
- If the player has not yet defeated Aleph:
- Aleph: HO HO, QUITE THE OPERATION YOU HAVE HERE, MR. MAMMON!
- Aleph: IT LOOKS LIKE YOU CAN DELEGATE. THAT’S A VALUABLE SKILL!
- Aleph: LET ME HELP YOU GET OUT OF HERE.
- Eugene: This place is falling apart. C'mon, we gotta go!
(The player, Eugene, and the Landkeepers escape the collapsing HQ.)
- Eugene: I guess all the Landkeeper agents fled... I wonder what they'll do, now their operation has been shut down?
- Eugene: Man, it was pretty cool when we fused in there.
(Choice between "You think?" and "It was, wasn't it?")
- Eugene: Yeah! It was like an adrenaline rush, except I could feel your will driving me as well as my own. Even an Archangel couldn't stop us!
- Eugene: An Archangel was behind the Landkeepers all along, huh...
- Eugene: What it said there... What if it was true?
- Eugene: Maybe without some cause to champion all the time, I am just a hollow person.
(Choice between "I don't think you're a loser." and "You shouldn't think that way.")
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: Heh. Thanks, man.
- Eugene: What motivates YOU to do what you do, anyway?
- Eugene: Y'know, you journey around, help people out, fight monsters and all that?
(Choice between "I've discovered a way off the island." and "I'm going to find a way to return home.")
- Eugene: Hmm. Sounds pretty improbable.
- Eugene: I'm in.
(Choice between "Really?" and "Just like that?")
- Eugene: Just like that!
- Eugene: We've stopped the Landkeepers, but I don't wanna just rest my feet.
- Eugene: I don't know if I physically can.
- Eugene: I need something to strive towards.
- Eugene: So let's do it. A new cause to work towards.
- Eugene: I'm in.
Relationship Level Scenes
Relationship Level 2
- Eugene: Man, I gotta say...
- Eugene: Monster fusion is pretty exhilarating.
(Choice between "You think?" and "I guess it is!")
- Eugene: Yeah! It's like...
- Eugene: A real manifestation of our inner strength.
- Eugene: Like, in the heat of the moment, our aims align so closely that we can literally become one powerful force.
- Eugene: In that moment, it's like we're unstoppable.
(Choice between "I know what you mean!" and "You sound like an anime character right now.")
- If chosen "I know what you mean!":
- Eugene: Man, I knew you'd get it!
- If chosen "You sound like an anime character right now.":
- Eugene: Man, I'm trying to be earnest here!
- Eugene: I think I spent too long living without giving back, y'know?
- Eugene: Maybe I'm making up for lost time.
(Choice between "What's the deal with your world?" and "What was happening on your world?")
- Eugene: Eh, don't worry about it. We can talk about it another time.
- Eugene: I'll go back. To my world, I mean. Once you find your doorway outta here, of course.
- Eugene: I'll bring my cassette tapes with me, and I'll stand up for the people who need it the most.
- Player: Like a monster-shaped superhero?
- Eugene: Like a monster-shaped superhero, yeah.
- Eugene: Sounds pretty badass, doesn't it?
Relationship Level 3
- Eugene: I was thinking about how Clémence totally just… decided to run a cafe just because it helped make the town better.
- Eugene: Improving things, making myself useful… that’s the kinda stuff I should be doing!
(Choice between "You don’t need to think about helping people all the time." and "You help enough!")
- Eugene: Heh. If you say so.
- Eugene: Maybe it's just a compulsion that comes from my world.
(Choice between "What do you mean?" and "...Your world?")
- Eugene: Ok, on ‘my earth’, around halfway through the 21st century, there was a kind of… an upheaval.
- Eugene: Humanity’s greed and consumption reached a point where the world couldn’t handle it anymore.
- Eugene: It was like everyone woke up one day and realised that we could survive better by just helping each other instead.
- Eugene: That we didn’t NEED the institutions that ruled over us while killing the planet.
- Eugene: Being able to help the people in your community slowly became more important than being rich and famous, but I was never… very good at it.
- Eugene: Me being here in New Wirral, it’s a chance for me to transform into my best self, so I can return home as someone who can do something with my life.
(Choice between "You don't need to be a hero to have value!" and "You don't need to beat yourself up over this!")
- Eugene: I know, but...
- Eugene: I think I need that for myself.
- Eugene: Anyway, enough from me.
Relationship Level 4
- Eugene: Ok, I’ve decided.
(Choice between "...Decided?" and "Decided on what?")
- Eugene: I have a project in mind.
- Eugene: I’m gonna stop talking about doing something, and just do it.
- Eugene: I’ll make Harbourtown better - just you wait and see.
(Choice between "You already stopped the Landkeepers!" and "You've already done your bit to help Harbourtown!")
- Eugene: I don’t know… stopping something bad doesn’t feel the same as doing something good, right?
- Eugene: Alright, I’m pumped! It’s gonna be awesome, just you wait.
(Choice between "What are you planning?" and "Can you tell me what 'it' is?")
- Eugene: Nah, you’re just gonna have to wait and see!
- Eugene: The “defender of Harbourtown” should be able to keep a secret, after all.
Relationship Level 5
- Eugene: Hey, can I show you something?
- Eugene: I finished my project. I think it's time for the grand opening.
- Eugene: Do you wanna head over now?
(Choice between "Sure!" and "Not now.")
- If chosen "Sure!":
- Eugene: Alright! I'll lead the way.
The player and Eugene stand in front of the first Landkeeper office that they cleared out. The fence around the building is no longer present.
- Eugene: Remember this place, <player>?
- Eugene: This is where we went on our first team-up mission together!
- Eugene: I realised that this ugly old building has been sitting here vacant since we cleared out the Landkeepers, so I thought I could put it to good use!
- Eugene: C’mon, let me show you inside!
The player and Eugene enter the building to see that the interior of the Landkeeper office has been remodeled. Two raised garden boxes with flowers, benches, a rug, some plants and a picture frame now decorate the room.
- Eugene: With the ceiling window, this abandoned office actually gets a lot of natural light during the day.
- Eugene: I figured it could make a nice community garden. Folks could come on over and grow plants and flowers here, and get out of town for a little bit.
(Choice between "When did you do all this?!" and "Where did you find the time for all this?!")
- Eugene: Hey, we don’t hang out ALL the time! I have my own free time away from our adventuring!
- Eugene: So… what do you think?
(Choice between "This is incredible!" and "I love it!")
- Eugene: Y-you actually think so?
- Eugene: I was convinced that this was a really dumb idea.
- Eugene: I'm glad you like it.
(Choice between "You're a pretty cool friend!" and "This is pretty romantic of you.")
- If chosen "You're a pretty cool friend!":
- Eugene: Heh, c'mon. Between the two of us, you're the one with the grand aspirations.
- Eugene: You're the one trying to find a way off this island! The limits of time and space don't even hold you back!
- Eugene: I'm looking forward to going back to my real home. I think I've become my best, badass self here.
- Eugene: Let's go, buddy.
- If chosen "This is pretty romantic of you.":
- Eugene: Well I guess it was time New Wirral had a new date spot.
(Choice between "I'd say your project was a success!" and "So... that makes this a date?")
- If chosen "I'd say your project was a success!":
- Eugene: Heh, c'mon. Between the two of us, you're the one with the grand aspirations.
- Eugene: You're the one trying to find a way off this island! The limits of time and space don't even hold you back!
- Eugene: I'm looking forward to going back to my real home. I think I've become my best, badass self here.
- Eugene: Let's go, buddy.
- If chosen "So... that makes this a date?":
- Eugene: Uh, I, I guess so...
- Eugene: If you want it to be, of course.
(Choice between "Not so confident with romance, huh?" and "I've never seen you so nervous!")
- Eugene: I guess you're right.
- Eugene: It’s pretty embarrassing that I can take down an evil cabal of office ghouls no problem…
- Eugene: But struggle to tell my partner-in-crime how I really feel about him/her/them.
- Eugene: Yeah, I guess this is a date.
- If chosen "Not now.":
- Eugene: No worries, buddy. Another time.
Romance
- Eugene: You’re pretty quiet. Is everything all good, buddy?
(Choice between "I want us to be together." and "Nothing in particular!")
- If chosen "I want us to be together.":
- Eugene: I… Uh...
- Eugene: I know. I mean, I do too. I’m just nervous.
- Eugene: I think both of us help each other become our best selves.
- Eugene: Together we’re greater than the sum of our parts. It’s like when we fuse!
- Eugene: That said… we might have to break up if we find our way off the island.
- Eugene: You mean a lot to me, but I have my old life that’s waiting for me to return back to. And you do too.
- Eugene: But while we’re together, let’s have fun!
- Eugene: There are people to help, and giant monsters to punch really hard in the face.
- Eugene: The same as always – Harbourtown’s unstoppable power couple!
- Eugene: Though maybe we can pause the adventuring, at least for tonight...
- If chosen "Nothing in particular!":
- Eugene: Gotcha.
Campsite and Gramophone Café Conversations
Before completion of Acting On Your Best Behaviour
- Eugene: I need to get back to my workout routine soon. I can’t save the world if I’m not at the top of my game, y’know!
- Eugene: Maybe one day some dumbbells will wash up on the beach…
- Eugene: How are you finding your <first_tape_name> form?
- Eugene: It kinda suits you, y’know!
- Eugene: Transforming into <first_tape_description> to defend the people of New Wirral!
- Eugene: I like it.
- Eugene: This is in, like, the top ten campfires I've ever helped make.
- Eugene: A really momentous fire. Good work, <player>.
(This requires his passive dialogue in New London to have triggered.)
- Eugene: Man, that ruined town we passed through really creeped me out.
- Eugene: It reminded me of some places I’d see back home. Towns where people used to live, until times got tough and they were left abandoned.
- Eugene: I used to see a lot of those, actually.
- Eugene: Maybe in time, the people of Harbourtown could go back and build it all back up again.
- Eugene: I’d like to see that happen.
- Eugene: Gathering around a campfire in the wilderness, knowing all the while that giant beasts might attack us at any moment... I think you're thinking the same thing I am right now, <player>.
(Choice between "What am I thinking, exactly?" and "What is it?)"
- Eugene: You're thinking: ‘this is just what life was like for my caveman ancestors!’
(Choice between "What?" and "I've never thought that, ever.")
- Eugene: I'm totally right. You were thinking it too, buddy.
- Eugene: I need to work on my battle shouts.
(Choice between "Your what?" and "Battle shouts..?)"
- Eugene: Yeah! Like when I'm facing down some foes, and just before I transform I yell something like, "let's do this!" or "transform!"
(Choice between "You can do better than those!" and ""Transform" isn't very original...")
- Eugene: It's an ongoing project, OK?
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: What if I shouted "I'm going monster mode!" – would that work? Do you think that sounds badass?
(Choice between "Not at all." and "Absolutely not.")
- Eugene: I'll come back to this another time, then.
After completion of Acting On Your Best Behaviour
- Eugene: Y'know, taking on the Landkeepers like we did...
- Eugene: In other worlds that would probably be illegal, right?
- Eugene: But it was the right thing to do, 'cause their "business plans" involved messing with people's lives.
- Eugene: I guess there's a big difference between the "law" and "true justice", huh?
- Eugene: At first I was kind of weirded out by how, uh, retro the clothes of New Wirral are.
- Eugene: Y’know, with them all coming from that old-fashioned mall?
- Eugene: But I’m starting to get attached to the look. I hope I can bring this pink jacket back to my world...
- Eugene: People in the past really had to carry round these plastic cassettes just to listen to music, huh.
- Eugene: They’re pretty ancient, so I imagine a single cassette tape could probably only store a few thousand songs on it.
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: Hey, why are you giving me that look?! Am I wrong, or something?!
- Eugene: I'm hope your plan to find a way off this island works, buddy.
- Eugene: I'm starting to worry that New Wirral's limited supply of hair dye is going to run out.
Relationship level 3
- Eugene: I hope we can bring this cassette technology back with us if we leave this island.
- Eugene: Being able to transform into monsters could empower people in wider society in ways we haven't even dreamed of!
- Eugene: Imagine being able to transform into a fast monster to deliver groceries... or becoming a water monster to put out wildfires.
- Eugene: I'm pumped just talking about it!
- Eugene: Do you ever think about… not going back to your world, <player>?
(Choice between "Why would I?" and "What do you mean?")
- Eugene: It’s like this: we’re not from the same point in our world’s history, are we?
- Eugene: We’re not from the same world, but from worlds that are probably quite similar.
- Eugene: So your world’s future could well be like my world’s history. Which means life might not be such smooth sailing for you, long term.
(Choice between "What are you saying?" and "What happened in your world’s past?")
- Eugene: I told you about how the people of my world built a new and better world, right?
- Eugene: Well, that new world was built from the ashes of the old one.
- Eugene: I was born after the smoke had cleared, but those that lived through it… I think it is a burden on all of them.
- Eugene: Not only the memories of what they lost, but also the memories of the kind of people that they had to become.
- Eugene: I know I can't stop you going back home, but I worry about the world you may one day live to see.
- Eugene: You deserve a better life than that, <player>.
After defeating Aleph Null
- Eugene: Do you really think that giant gateway can really take us home?
- Eugene: When we're all done here on New Wirral, I mean.
(Choice between "I believe so!" and "It has to.")
- Eugene: Momentous.
- Eugene: I hope it's true. I have a lot of cool plans for life, y'know!
(This requires having told Ianthe the way home.)
- Eugene: Man, if that big gateway does actually let people leave New Wirral, that’s gonna change a lot here.
- Eugene: Think about it – this whole miniature society is built on the foundation of a shared experience. That being the experience of marooned here on this weird island.
- Eugene: Heck, a lot of folks here were born and raised by people from different worlds. They haven’t KNOWN anything else!
- Eugene: I hope Ianthe is ready for how this discovery might change everything.
(Eugene must have fought Aleph Null.)
- Eugene: Um, I think we should talk about what happened.
(Choice between "Talk about what?" and "What do you mean?")
- Eugene: When we, y'know..
- Eugene: When we all fused into a giant god monster together and kicked Aleph's ass!
- Eugene: That was awesome, right?
- Eugene: I'm gonna be pretty honest with you, there's a whole lot of "Archangel" business on the island that I'm not keeping up with at all.
- Eugene: Like there's all this ancient history with Morgante and Aleph, or something? Maybe the railway station is involved? I don't know, man.
- Eugene: But what I do know is that we banded together and took down a big bad guy. That's something I can wrap my brain around.
After romance
- Eugene: I… think you look really nice, lit by the fire like that.
- Eugene: If I had a camera, I’d take a picture of you. Too bad I don’t, right?
- Eugene: Do you think much about what life will be like when you go back home?
- Eugene: I hope… all this is real.
- Eugene: That must have crossed your mind too, right?
- Eugene: I hope it’s not like a dream, where you forget it moments after you’re back in the real world.
- Eugene: I don’t want to forget you, <player>.
- Eugene: I’m... glad I’ve been able to meet you, <player>.
- Eugene: ...
- Eugene: Man, no-one is gonna believe I had a cute girlfriend/boyfriend/partner on this magical island, are they?
- Eugene: I’m normally kinda hopeless with relationships. Fighting Archangels is easier than trying to work out what someone else is feeling.
- Eugene: Maybe I should work on that…
- Eugene: Sorry, I’m still getting used to the fact that we’re technically a couple now.
(Choice between "”Technically”?" and "You don’t sound super thrilled.")
- Eugene: Oh, I didn’t mean that in a bad way!
- Eugene: I just wasn’t expecting something like this to happen to me here on New Wirral. Of course I’m pumped that we’re together!
- Eugene: It would be so easy to stay here together, wouldn’t it?
Choice between "What do you mean?" and "Huh?"
- Eugene: You and I, living life in the quiet but idyllic Harbourtown. Nothing changing.
- Eugene: But… I just don’t think that’s us, is it? I think we’re both meant for more.
Passive Dialogue
Upon being in an area where the monsters are higher level than you, one of the following may appear:
- Eugene: This area looks pretty dangerous. Maybe we should retreat for now...
- Eugene: The monsters here look tougher than us – maybe we should do a bit more training before coming here…
- Eugene: I don’t know, man – the monsters here seem too tough for us right now...
Upon finding a destructible rock when you have Bulletino Dash unlocked.
- Eugene: That rock has cracks running all the way through it. You could break that thing wide open with a dash!
Upon finding a magnetic pylon with Electromagnetism unlocked.
- Eugene: That blue box hanging on the wooden post looks pretty magnetic, don't you think?
After approaching the gravestones in Aldgrave Tomb Station.
- Eugene: Is that my name written there..?
- Eugene: These are some pretty big mushrooms, buddy.
In Falldown Mall.
- Eugene: Where I’m from, there’s empty buildings like this across the whole country…
After falling down in Cherry Cross Station.
- Eugene: That was pretty intense just now…
- Eugene: A canal, huh? I wonder where the water is flowing from?
In Eugene's house.
- Eugene: Yeah, this is my place. Eugene HQ. The pad. My base of operations.
When near the battery-activated switch that reveals Cherry Cross Station.
- Eugene: Check out this switch! I bet we could activate if we found a magnet nearby…
In eastern Lost Hearts Graveyard.
- Eugene: It gives me the creeps that the skeleton monsters hang out here of all places…
Outside of Glaistainbury Abbey.
- Eugene: That church needs a renovation or six.
In Cast Iron Shore.
- Eugene: Watch your step, <player> – there’s monsters that hide just below the surface of the water here…
On Brokenhead.
- Eugene: OK, I had no idea there was a floating island here on New Wirral. Was this hidden in the clouds?
Near the sticker merchants in Harbourtown.
- Eugene: Maybe these guys have something we can use in our endless battle for justice!
On the pier in Harbourtown.
- Eugene: This place is a cute little town, don’t you think?
On the western part of Harbourtown Beach.
- Eugene: This is a pretty good spot to do some push ups!
On the bridge in New Wirral Park.
- Eugene: This bridge was a community effort. It’s pretty cool if you ask me!
On the narrow path in the Southern Isles.
- Eugene: This is a pretty narrow path, huh?
In Cherry Meadow.
- Eugene: This is a beautiful meadow, isn’t it?
In Eastham Woods.
- Eugene: Keep your eyes peeled, <player> – who knows what kind of monsters are hiding in this forest…
In the Marshes.
- Eugene: I’m totally gonna ruin my trainers running through all this mud…
In Mt. Wirral.
- Eugene: It’s pretty cold out here, I’m not gonna lie.
In New London.
- Eugene: This place gives me the creeps…
In the player's house.
- Eugene: Hey, is this your place? Not bad, buddy!
In the player's home, if you have him romanced.
- Eugene: Are you giving your boyfriend a home tour, then?
Character Interactions
Eugene and Kayleigh
- Kayleigh: ...I don’t understand you, Eugene. You love all this “save the community” stuff, but you don’t want to join the rangers with me?
- Eugene: It’s nothing personal. I’m just a loose cannon, is all. A lone wolf. I can’t abide by an organisation that might hold me back.
- Kayleigh: I don’t think that’s it. I think you’re scared that you might fail the entry test!
- Eugene: Th-that’s not it at all!
Eugene and Meredith
- Meredith: ...I did have some engineering work to do back at the shop, but I might just swerve it for now.
- Eugene: Yeah! You gotta take a break sometimes, buddy!
- Eugene: …. Wait, what did you say just now?
- Meredith: Uhh, I said I had some engineering work to do?
- Eugene: What did you say after that…?
- Meredith: ...I was gonna swerve it?
- Eugene: Is that a phrase? To “swerve” something?
- Meredith: Oh, I mean, yeah. Like if you’re going to skip out on doing something or going somewhere, that’s you “swerving” it.
- Eugene: OK, gotcha. I shall embrace your unusual slang with an open mind.
- Meredith: I think I’m gonna swerve this whole conversation.
Eugene and Felix
- Eugene: ...So you quit your job, because your bosses kept screwing you around?
- Felix: Pretty much. It’s more than that, though. If I went to work somewhere else, I’d just have another boss giving me orders.
- Felix: The only way to break the cycle is to work for myself. No more bosses.
- Eugene: Yeah! That’s the spirit! No more bosses – live on your own terms, man!
- Felix: Though my career plans have hit a roadblock recently. I think it happened after I fell through time and space and ended up living on monster island.
- Eugene: It happens to the best of us!
Eugene and Viola
- Eugene: ...So you washed up on New Wirral after being shipwrecked in a storm, right?
- Viola: Yes, that is correct.
- Eugene: And you’re looking for your twin brother, Sebastian…
- Eugene: This just sounds really familiar and I don’t know why. Are you famous? Have we met before?
- Viola: I can assure you that I am no-one of notoriety or interest. As for whether we’ve met? I’m sure I would remember someone as spirited as thee, Eugene.
- Eugene: I guess so. Still, your story seems so familiar…
Eugene and Barkley
- Eugene: ...So you’re a dog.
- Barkley: Arf!
- Eugene: …But you can use a cassette player to transform into monsters like the rest of us.
- Barkley: Arf arf!
- Eugene: Are you some kind of… magical talking dog? From another world?
- Barkley: Arf!
- Eugene: Hmm. I guess not.
Eugene and Sunny
- Sunny: ...It feels so long ago when we first met, Eugene…
- Eugene: You mean when you first walked into this café? Yeah, I guess it’s been a little bit since then.
- Sunny: No, I mean when I was a Landkeeper and first came into Harbourtown. You confronted me and my colleague and told us to leave, remember…?
- Eugene: Wait, that was YOU? Sunny, I never realised…
- Sunny: It’s OK, Eugene. We weren’t friends when we first met, but we are now… That’s better, don’t you think…?
- Eugene: A big improvement, I agree.
Eugene and Frankie
- Frankie: …I just think that maybe I’m not the person my parents thought I’d be growing up. They’re supportive of me, but maybe I’m not the kid they thought I’d be.
- Eugene: I get that. I had a pretty momentous childhood - but my parents spent a lot of theirs fighting in the trenches of a guerilla war for the fate of a burning world, y’know?
- Frankie: …What?
- Eugene: I mean like, they raised me as best they could… but growing up I played in the ruins of the death machines that their generation felled, right?
- Eugene: There’s gonna be some distance between us when they’ve experienced something like that.
- Frankie: …Maybe my life is pretty easy, all things considered.
Date with Sunny
(Before beginning People are People, if the player chose to stay platonic with Eugene during his 5-heart scene, the following scene may play when entering East Harbourtown at night.)
(Next to the town sun dial, Sunny and Eugene stand side by side, looking towards the sea.)
- Sunny: ...I just don't think it's... I think we should just be friends.
- Eugene: Is this because of my whole "campaign to take down the Landkeepers" thing? I know we're an unlikely pair but I can't stop thinking about you.
- Eugene: It's weird.
- Sunny: No, it's not that. I'm not a Landkeeper now. I think...
- Sunny: I haven't been "Sunny" for long. I need more time to be me.
- Sunny: I have enjoyed our "date", though.
- Eugene: I understand. Don't worry about it, Sunny.
Mer-Line station and Archangel encounters
This section is incomplete. Feel free to add the missing information by editing it.
Station and platform reactions
(Upon entering a station for the first time with Eugene.)
- Eugene: What?! Is this a train station?! No-one ever said something like THIS was on New Wirral!
(Upon entering a station for the second time.)
- Eugene: Another train station, huh? This island sure holds some secrets…
(Upon entering a station for the third time.)
- Eugene: Man, we might be some of the first people to step foot in here for a LONG time…
(Upon entering a station platform for the first time with Eugene.)
- Eugene: Do you feel that, <player>? It’s like radio static that I can’t hear, but I can feel...
- Eugene: It’s messed up…
(Upon entering a station platform for the second time.)
- Eugene: It’s that weird atmosphere again… Can you feel it?
- Eugene: It makes my teeth itch…
(Upon entering a station platform for the third time.)
- Eugene: Oh, that painful atmosphere is back. That never means anything good.
- Eugene: Stay on your guard, buddy.
(Upon using the mirror to enter Night's Bridge Station.)
- Eugene: Did that mirror hide this place? Can mirrors do that?! Am I missing something here, or what?
(Upon entering the lobby of Night's Bridge Station.)
- Eugene: This place feels empty, like no-one has been here for hundreds of years…
- Eugene: Is this where it is? The doorway to leave New Wirral?
Archangel reactions
(Upon encountering an Archangel for the first time with Eugene.)
- Eugene: What – how – does that thing look like… that?! It’s breaking my brain…
- Eugene: I guess this is an Archangel, huh?
(Upon encountering an Archangel for the second time.)
- Eugene: It’s an Archangel again! Urgh, just looking at it makes me feel like it’s not supposed to be here…
(Upon encountering an Archangel for the third time.)
- Eugene: An Archangel! Get ready, <player>!
(Upon encountering Alice.)
- Eugene: Buddy, I have NO idea who you are.
(After defeating Alice.)
- Eugene: These Archangels are pretty rude, huh?
(Upon encountering Heckahedron.)
- Eugene: This thing is kind of hard to look at...
(After defeating Heckahedron.)
- Eugene: That Archangel was strange. It felt like no matter what angle I saw it from, it looked the same.
(Upon encountering Lamento Mori.)
- Eugene: Nah, we came here to fight.
(After defeating Lamento Mori.)
- Eugene: That was the biggest skeleton monster I’ve ever seen! Pretty creepy, huh?
(Upon encountering Poppetox.)
- Eugene: Are people just toys to your kind, huh?!
(After hitting the effigies during the battle.)
- Eugene: Dammit, it keeps moving right when we’re about to hit it! C’mon there’s gotta be some way to tell which way it’s gonna move next…
(After defeating Poppetox.)
- Eugene: There’s always some monster who thinks that people’s lives are their playthings. Archangel or man, they’re dangerous all the same.
(Upon encountering Babelith.)
- Eugene: ...I don’t get it. What are you trying to say?
(After defeating Babelith.)
- Eugene: Archangels may be powerful, but that doesn’t mean that they’re smart.
Aleph retrospectives
(Upon seeing Aleph for the first time.)
- Eugene: So, just so we’re on the same page – you also saw the floating guy with the red coat suck up the Archangel with his triangle head, right? Just making sure.
(Upon seeing Aleph for the second time.)
- Eugene: OK, so that’s the second time the man in the red coat has appeared to make an Archangel disappear, am I correct?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the third time.)
- Eugene: The floating man in the red coat – that’s the third time he’s appeared and made an Archangel vanish, am I right?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the fourth time.)
- Eugene: The man in the red coat said he wanted to have a “proper talk” with you. That seemed a bit menacing, huh…
(Upon seeing Aleph for the fifth time, after completing the intermission.)
- Eugene: That was a pretty momentous fight, but right now I’m just thinking about Aleph. What’s his deal, huh?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the fifth time, if you have not completed the intermission.)
- Eugene: That was a pretty awesome fight, but right now I’m thinking more about the floating man who turned up at the end. If he’s a threat to Harbourtown, I should keep an eye out for him…
(Upon seeing Aleph for the sixth time, after completing the intermission.)
- Eugene: Aleph doesn’t seem to want to fight himself, does he? He always seems to make an appearance AFTER the fighting has stopped.
(Upon seeing Aleph for the sixth time, if you have not completed the intermission.)
- Eugene: That man with the triangle head... do you think he’s an Archangel as well? He seems pretty powerful. I don’t trust him one bit.
(Upon seeing Aleph for the seventh time, after completing the intermission.)
- Eugene: What did Aleph mean when he said that there’s “legends” based on him?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the seventh time, if you have not completed the intermission.)
- Eugene: What did that triangle guy mean when he said that there’s “legends” based on him?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the eighth time, after completing the intermission.)
- Eugene: Aleph turned up again after that fight. No surprises there. He seems to appear whenever you find an Archangel, doesn’t he?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the eighth time, if you have not completed the intermission.)
- Eugene: That triangle man was there again. No surprises there. He seems to appear whenever you find an Archangel, doesn’t he?
(Upon seeing Aleph for the ninth time, after completing the intermission.)
- Eugene: Aleph loves to hear himself talk. How does he even talk, anyway? His head is, like, a giant triangle. What a creep.
(Upon seeing Aleph for the ninth time, if you have not completed the intermission.)
- Eugene: That Archangel talks like he’s an office manager. That weirds me out, buddy.
Here Comes The Sun
(Conversing with Helia)
- Eugene: You're responsible for Rogue Fusions?
- Eugene: Come on! We can manage fine without your "wonderful beasts".
(After being told about The Mer-Line)
- Eugene: Alright! Let's go punch some trains!
(After meeting The Mer-Line)
- Eugene: Well, maybe it’s for the best that we don't fight this one. You know what Helia said about Aleph...
Pier of the Unknown
(After meeting Gwen)
- Eugene: This new mission of ours to save this pier…
- Eugene: It’s pretty weird, right? Like, I guess we’re helping someone out, but I also don’t know what to think about Gwen.
Choice between "I think we can trust her!" and "I don't know if we can trust her."
- Eugene: Whatever the case: stay on your guard, buddy. Who knows what we’ll find out here…
(After defeating Gwenivar)
- Eugene: So “Gwen” was an Archangel the whole time?
- Eugene: But it still sounds like helping her out was a good thing… I think…?
- Eugene: Man, I don’t know what to make about any of that stuff. It’s above my paygrade.
- Eugene: Whatever it all means, it still sounds like a job well done. Nice work, <player>.
Magikrab's Gauntlet
(When encountering Eugene)
- Eugene: Another me, huh? Or is it like, a future me? A past me? Who cares, he's going down!
(When encountering Mammon)
- Eugene: A rematch, huh? Bring it on!
(When Eugene is on his own)
- Eugene: Another obstacle to knock down? Momentous!
(When Eugene is the first fighter in a pair)
- Eugene: Let's hit 'em hard, buddy!
(When Eugene is the second fighter in a pair)
- Eugene: Momentous plan! Let's fight!
