Outside the Ranger Outpost

  • Confident Woman: Hey, you! You boys aren't normally bold enough to venture this close to our outpost. Why don't you get on out of here while this conversation remains civil?
  • Confident Woman: You ain't moving, huh? Guess I gotta get my hands dirty, then.

(Ianthe transforms into Gearyu and defeats the Rogue Fusion)

If current partner is Kayleigh:
  • Kayleigh: She's in charge for a reason, huh...
If current partner is Eugene:
  • Eugene: Momentous.
If current partner is Felix:
  • Felix: Rad.
If current partner is Viola:
  • Viola: She holds herself with a confidence I have rarely seen before.

Inside Ranger Outpost

  • Leader Ianthe: Ianthe. Nice to meet you, newbie.
  • Leader Ianthe: Well, what do you think of this outpost? This place was abandoned for the longest time. With a bit of work, we turned it into a rest stop for weary rangers.

(Choice between "What do you do here?" and "What are the rangers for?")

  • Leader Ianthe: I'd like to tell you we defend the people of New Wirral from a relentless horde of monsters...
  • Leader Ianthe: But most of the time we're doing odd jobs for the community. It's really not that exciting.
If current partner is Kayleigh.:
  • Leader Ianthe: Kayleigh can attest to that, as one of our more recent recruits!
  • Kayleigh: W-well, <player> and I just fought an Archangel!
  • Leader Ianthe: ...Is that so? We'll have to look into this.
  • Leader Ianthe: We're pretty sure Archangels exist, but our interactions with them have been...fleeting.
  • Kayleigh: Well, maybe we should find more! Ianthe, I think <player> should apply to be a ranger!
  • Leader Ianthe: Well, what do you think, <player>? Do you wanna apply to join the rangers?
If current partner is not Kayleigh.:
  • Leader Ianthe: Except Ranger Kayleigh insists the two of you fought an Archangel together.

(Choice between "It's true!" and "We fought it and won!")

  • Leader Ianthe: We're pretty sure Archangels exist, but our interactions with them have been...fleeting.
  • Leader Ianthe: To even survive an encounter with something like that would show some real fortitude.
If current partner is Eugene:
  • Eugene: <Player> holds his/her/their own in a fight. I can vouch for that!
If current partner is Felix:
  • Felix: <Player> is pretty tough.
If current partner is Viola:
  • Viola: <Player> fights valiantly.
  • Leader Ianthe: Well, what do you think, <player>? Do you wanna apply to join the rangers?

(Choice between "Apply?" and "What do I have to do?")

  • Leader Ianthe: Trainees are tasked with meeting up with each of the ranger captains here in New Wirral, and overcoming their challenges.
  • Leader Ianthe: Since you're such a hotshot in monster combat, I'm pretty sure the captains are gonna want to test your fighting abilities.

(Choice between "Ranger... captains?" and "Who are these ranger captains?")

  • Leader Ianthe: You really are new here.
  • Leader Ianthe: Trainees who pass the trial become full-time rangers, like Kayleigh. Rangers have a lot of responsibilities, but nothing that would put them in significant danger.
  • Leader Ianthe: The captains, like myself, run the whole operation. We try to maintain the community in Harbourtown, and the most dangerous situations fall on us to resolve.

(Choice between "So captains are the top rangers..." and "OK, I understand now!")

  • Leader Ianthe: Here, take one of these.

(Player obtains the Ranger Trainee Card)

(Choice between "Is this a stamp card...?" and "Does this give me free coffee?")

  • Leader Ianthe: Everytime you overcome a captain's challenge, they'll stamp this card. When you've filled it all in, come see me and I can sign you off as an official ranger.
  • Leader Ianthe: Each captain has perfected their own strategy in battle - it ain't just about raw strength. You're gonna have to learn to adapt your approach as you go.
  • Leader Ianthe: You think you can handle it, <player>?

(Choice between "I'm ready!" and "Of course!")

  • Leader Ianthe: That's the spirit.
  • Leader Ianthe: Anyway, I gotta head back into town, if you need me, come swing by our headquarters.
  • Leader Ianthe: The building with half a ship wedged on top of it? You can't miss it.

Battle

(After selecting Sure!")

  • Leader Ianthe: I've been itching to see what you're really made of. I hope you're prepared to give us your all!

(Option between ""Us"?" and "Who are you fighting alongside?)

  • Leader Ianthe: Well, I think it'd only be reasonable that my wife gets to help me out on this one.

(Choice between "Your wife?" and "You're married?")

  • Leader Ianthe: Are you ready, honey?
  • Wilma: Yes, dear!

(Outside with all captains gathered)

  • Cybil: This is really shaping up to be the hottest fight of the year! Who will come out on top?
  • Lodestein: You got this one, <player>!
  • Skip: C'mon, offworlder - show Ianthe who's boss!
  • Clee-0: KICK HER ASS, IANTHE! DON'T HOLD BACK!
  • Leader Ianthe: Don't think we're gonna pull any punches, <player>. You're not a trainee anymore - you're in the big leagues now!

(After fusing with Wilma)

  • Ianthe/Wilma: What, you thought you were the only ones who could fuse?

(After the battle)

  • Leader Ianthe: Not bad! Not bad at all! You never fail to impress, do you?
  • Wilma: The stories were true! What a battle!
  • Leader Ianthe: Here - this is yours.
  • Leader Ianthe: This means you're officially a ranger captain. Folks will look to you to help train them just like the other captains trained you.
  • Leader Ianthe: You might be aware that I was the first person in New Wirral to have transformed into a monster with a cassette tape. Since then, folks have been asking me the same question...
  • Leader Ianthe: "How does this cassette tape thing even work? It doesn't make any sense!"
  • Leader Ianthe: You want to know what I think? I think it makes perfect sense with the right perspective.
  • Leader Ianthe: Humans create art, such as music - art is an intangible and imaginary thing that exists entirely within our collective imagination.
  • Leader Ianthe: Then, we seal that intangible music in physical forms - such as the cassette tape. That makes it a perfect bridge between the physical world and the imaginary one.
  • Leader Ianthe: I think it makes sense, in a way!
  • Leader Ianthe: You've seen the noticeboard outside the Town Hall, right? If there are any trainees who need to test their skills, I'll leave you a message there.
  • Leader Ianthe: For now, I'm going to take a long overdue rest. If you're going to continue your exploration across the island, why don't you catch up with your fellow captains?
  • Leader Ianthe: I'm sure they'd like to congratulate you on your "promotion"!

In the Town Hall

  • Leader Ianthe: Hey, <player>.Something on your mind?

"Training with the captains..."

If player has not yet defeated all captains:
  • Leader Ianthe: We station the captains all around the island so that there's always somebody nearby if there's a sudden emergency.
  • Leader Ianthe: If you need help finding them, try some of the other rangers around here. I'm a little busy at the moment.
If player has defeated all captains:
  • Leader Ianthe: Do you have a completed stamp card to show me, perhaps?

(Choice between "That's right!" and "Here it is!")

  • Leader Ianthe: So the chatter was correct! You haven't been here long, but you've already shown a real knack for traversing the island and overcoming any obstacle.
  • Leader Ianthe: Congratulations, <player>, you're officially a ranger!
If current partner is Kayleigh:
  • Kayleigh: Brilliant! You've earned this, <player>!
If current partner is Eugene:
  • Eugene: Awesome work, buddy!
If current partner is Meredith:
  • Meredith: Cool. I'm happy for you, mate.
If current partner is Felix:
  • Felix: You've earned this!
If current partner is Viola:
  • Viola: Your efforts have proven true, friend.
If current partner is Barkley:
  • Barkley: Awooo!
  • Leader Ianthe: I'm afraid we don't have any special ceremonies to mark the occasion. We're too busy training new recruits so that we can deal with those rogue fusion.
  • Leader Ianthe: Y'know...
  • Leader Ianthe: We could use more people like you helping with the training. Have you ever thought about becoming a captain?

(Choice between "I have!" and "Not really!")

  • Leader Ianthe: If you're interested, there's one final challenge-you have to defeat me in combat.
  • Leader Ianthe: Well, what do you say? Do you want to take on the trial to become a ranger captain?

(Choice between "Not now." and "Sure!")

(See battle dialogue above)

"About elemental types..."

  • Leader Ianthe: Have you been paying attention to the elemental types of your monster forms?
  • Leader Ianthe: Elemental moves can cause chemical reactions when used against monsters of certain types.
  • Leader Ianthe: These reactions can be beneficial for you - for example, using a fire move on a poison element target will cause them to burn.
  • Leader Ianthe: However, that same fire move, when used on a water monster, will surround them with a healing steam.
  • Leader Ianthe: You can always see what status effects your attack is going to cause before you trigger it, so stay observant.
  • Leader Ianthe: Oh, I almost forgot! A lot of moves, such as "Smack" and "Spit", don't have an innate element themselves - they will instead depend on whatever element their user is.

"What is Fused Material?"

If player is not a captain:
  • Leader Ianthe: Rogue Fusion drop it. Maybe Archangels do too - I'm not sure.
  • Leader Ianthe: As for why we're asking rangers to collect it...Well, let the captains worry about that. Just focus on passing your training.

"About fusion..."

  • Leader Ianthe: Fusion...it's rarely been achieved. I have my theories on what allows two people to sue, but I'm not certain.

(Choice between "Who have you fused with?" and "Who's your fusion partner?")

  • Leader Ianthe: Don't you worry about that!

Talking with ranger captains

Talking with Buffy
  • Buffy: ...I'm thinking that the rangers would benefit from some physical fitness classes.
  • Buffy: We could even make it fun! How about dance aerobics? Cybil could provide a music playlist!
  • Leader Ianthe: Yeah, that sounds like a cute idea! If you think you can manage it, of course.
  • Buffy: No sweat! I used to run a cardio class every week for five years. If anyone's up to the job, it me!
Talking with Clee-0
  • Clee-0: ...I simply find it difficult to sympathise with the plight of the human race.
  • Leader Ianthe: That's understandable. People can be...confusing. Unpredictable.
  • Clee-0: ...Nah, I disagree. Humans are not unpredictable. You can predict their behaviour very easily, in fact.
  • Clee-0: Human beings will make the stupidest decision possible in any given scenario as long as there is even a miniscule short-term reward.
  • Leader Ianthe: I appreciate your honest analysis, Clee-0!
  • Leader Ianthe: Humans generally don't make decisions based on the odds. They make them based on their emotions.
  • Clee-0: So do I! It is my emotions that tell me mankind is inherently stupid and will eventually sow the seeds of its own destruction!
  • Leader Ianthe: Well until that happens, your services in the rangers will still be valued.
  • Clee-0: Hmph.
Talking with Codey
  • Cody: ...If I knew that people would be called me "Cody" forever, I would have picked a cooler nickname. Like "Killswitch", or "Omegabyte".
  • Leader Ianthe: I mean, you can just pick your own name. I did.
  • Codey: Wait...Your name wasn't always Ianthe?!
  • Leader Ianthe: Nope! In my former line of work, it was safer to pick an alias - I'm sure you can relate.
  • Leader Ianthe: "Ianthe" is the name of a water goddess in Greek mythology. I needed to choose a name in a pinch and thought it sounded good.
  • Codey: Huh. You sure do have a lot of secrets of your own, don't you?
  • Leader Ianthe: Don't expect me to tell you any more than that!
Talking with Penny Dreadful
  • Penny Dreadful: ...I'm telling you boss, something's shifted on the astral plane lately. All the ghosts are talking about it. There's some big players back on the board, they're sayin'!
  • Leader Ianthe: "All the ghosts"...?
  • Penny Dreadful: Of course! There's all sorts of spirits, shades and tulpas hanging out on the astral plane. Where do you think I get my best intel from?
  • Leader Ianthe: I'll take your word for it!
Talking with Gladiola
  • Leader Ianthe: So, what can you tell me? I want your full analysis.
  • Gladiola: Very well! Our "rogue fusion" problem has indeed been increasing in recent months. Have you seen the dense black clouds in the air, recently? I have concluded that these indicate where monsters are swarming.
  • Gladiola: On a recent recon mission, I found myself in the midst of a swarm of Jellytons. They may have had superior numbers, but I cut them down all the same!
  • Gladiola: However, I fear that our more inexperienced rangers may underestimate these threats and find themselves in mortal peril. Perhaps we should get the word out about these "monster swarms".
  • Leader Ianthe: Consider it done! Your intel is valuable as always, Gladiola.
Talking with Heather
  • Heather: ...Well? Do you miss it? Life in the big city, I mean.
  • Heather: I know I do!
  • Leader Ianthe: It certainly was more exciting...but that doesn't mean life was better.
  • Leader Ianthe: I lived my whole life in a mega-metropolis. The only trees I had seen were made in factories. The stars had long been blotted out by the skyscrapers and their neon facades.
  • Leader Ianthe: The value of life was fleeting, and you had to harden your spirit if you wanted to stay alive in such a cruel world.
  • Leader Ianthe: You can imagine that when I first landed here, it took a long time for me to get used to this pace of life!
  • Heather: That's...a bit more of an answer than I was expecting, boss!
Talking with Judas
  • Judas: ...I'm serious, Ianthe. The latest batch of ranger trainees just don't have what it TAKES. They don't understand that strategy matters more than just transforming into the scariest monster.
  • Leader Ianthe: Well isn't that your job - to teach them?
  • Leader Ianthe: The newcomers are enthusiastic, and that's a good start. Who better than to teach them combat tactics then a master tactician?
  • Judas: Heh. I see your point. I'll reserve my judgment...
  • Judas: For now.
Talking with Lodestein
  • Lodestein: ...And that concludes my report, Our hydroelectric generators are all fully functioning. We might need some new parts in the next couple of years, but it's small stuff.
  • Leader Ianthe: Not a bad state of affairs for the town, then! Thanks for your report, Levi.
  • Leader Ianthe: It's a miracle that we have running water and clean energy at all. I worry sometimes that things could change. This island is unpredictable.
  • Lodestein: Don't stress about it, captain! Even if Habourtown's fortunes change, the rangers will be here to make the best of it.
  • Leader Ianthe: Thanks for saying that - you're right, of course!
Talking with Skip
  • Skip: ...C'mon, Ianthe! You gotta tell me what your life was like before you came to New Wirral!
  • Leader Ianthe: Well... I was something like a detective, if that makes sense.
  • Skip: Wow! Did you have to find people's missing stuff a lot? Offworlders seem to own a lot of things and they must lose them here and there, right?
  • Leader Ianthe: My jobs tended to be a ... little higher stakes than that, if I'm honest.
  • Skip: I should better get back to my scavenging operation, but next time I see you you have to tell me more!
Talking with Wallace
  • Wallace: ...I'm tellin' you, boss. This new trainee knows how to handle his/her/themselves!
  • Wallace: Me and the boys were proper impressed! I was absolutely flattened in our fight.
  • Leader Ianthe: It's rare to hear you so impressed by a trainee's performance, Wallace!
  • Wallace: Well, it's not often that we do combat trials for the trainees. My usual "build a brick wall" test isn't quite as exciting to sit through...
  • Wallace: Speaking of which, my lunch break is over! I got work to do - see you later, boss!
Talking with Zedd
  • Zedd: ...I'm gonna be honest Ianthe, I don't think the other captains get it.
  • Leader Ianthe: Get...what, exactly?
  • Zedd: The whole sleep thing, man! My whole deal!
  • Zedd: They don't know about the dreamscape, the collective subconscious, or how any of it affects this whole place!
  • Zedd: If I'm honest, I'm starting to suspect they think I'm just a big slacker.
  • Leader Ianthe: Well, you ARE a big slacker.
  • Zedd: Heh. I know.
  • Leader Ianthe: Don't worry about the others. They don't have to understand your work, they just have to respect my decision to make you a captain.
  • Zedd: Thanks for the pep talk, captain.
