Falldown Mall
(After finding a record by The Witch House in the vinyl record store)
- Meredith: That album art - you've found it!
- Meredith: Wait. Something's not right.
- Meredith: "Timeless and Strange"? That's not the name of the album...
- Meredith: And this cover art is slightly different too...
- Meredith: The track listing... I don't know these songs.
- Meredith: It's some alternate universe version. The one I wanted isn't here.
- Meredith: I knew I shouldn't have expected anything good to happen to me.
- Meredith: Typical...
(Meredith and the player fall as the floor collapses, landing in a Mer-Line Station)
- Meredith: Urgh, what happened... <player> , are you OK? The record - I dropped it. Can you see it?
(When Meredith and the player meets Nowhere Monarch)
- Meredith: Wh-what is that?! Why does it look so... wrong?!
- Meredith: It hurts my head just looking at it... <player>, it's an Archangel, isn't it...?
(Mid-battle against Nowhere Monarch)
- Meredith: It'd be so easy...
- Meredith: It'd be so easy to give up and just die...
- Meredith: But that's not me! I'm sick of letting myself down![1]
(When Nowhere Monarch is defeated)
- Meredith: We did it... We're alive... We fused?
(After defeating Nowhere Monarch)
- Meredith: Uh...
- Meredith: I realise that this was a really trivial thing to come all this way for.
- Meredith: And a really stupid thing to nearly die over.
- Meredith: You didn't have to do this. Thanks mate.
- Meredith: I think... I've had enough of abandoned malls and mortal peril for today.
- Meredith: C'mon, let's go back to town and check this record out.[1]
Relationship Level Scenes
Relationship Level 1
- Meredith: So... The whole... Fusion thing....
- Meredith: I felt like we should, uh, talk about it?
(Choice between "It's pretty weird, right?" and "It's pretty cool, right?")
- Meredith: It's certainly... Something.
- Meredith: It's like our minds merge, and I am no longer me.
- Meredith: Afterwards, whilst I can remember it, it doesn't feel like it's something that I experienced.
- Meredith: It's like remembering a dream. Maybe our brains just aren't equipped to process it...
- Meredith: Had you, uh, fused with anyone before?
- Meredith: N-not that it's a big deal if you have! I just wasn't sure if that was your first time.
- Meredith: This is... coming out all wrong.
- Meredith: Forget I said anything.
- Meredith: I've been meaning to ask...
- Meredith: What makes you so sure that you have a way to return home?
- Player: I had a vision...
- Meredith: Uh, you're gonna have to tell me the full story here, mate.
(Fade to black.)
- Meredith: ...Huh. That's pretty wild.
- Meredith: I'll uphold my end of the bargain. You helped me find a record, I'll help you find a way off New Wirral.
- Meredith: Oh! I almost forgot about the record!
(Meredith pops the record into the café's titular gramophone.)
- Meredith: ...
- Meredith: This is pretty good.
- Meredith: I mean, It's not the same album I used to have, but it's familiar enough.
- Meredith: I, uh, I spent my teen years being very miserable, and bad with people.
- Meredith: When I went to college, I wanted to change, for real.
- Meredith: The record was kind of the soundtrack to me, like, trying to change and get better...
- Meredith: Not that I did. I almost made lifelong friends, but they don't speak to me anymore.
- Meredith: I know it's me who's the problem, but I want to keep trying.
- Meredith: Maybe that's what that Archangel meant. Maybe I've spent too much time distracting myself with stuff instead of trying to actually live.
- Meredith: But even if we didn't find exactly what I was looking for, I'm... OK with this outcome.
- Meredith: You didn't need to risk your life to help me.
- Meredith: A lot sucks about New Wirral, but...
- Meredith: You're kinda cool.
Relationship Level 2
- Meredith: With both the Archangels appearing and us fusing for the first time, things have suddenly gotten very strange in my life lately.
(Choice between "Strange?" and "In a bad way?")
- Meredith: Don't take that the wrong way! Fusing with you is cool. But it's weird, right?
- Meredith: I guess I wasn't expecting this island to throw any more surprises at me. Not to mention your plan to find a way to leave...
- Meredith: It's been so long since I arrived here, I've barely thought about going back.
- Meredith: I guess... I was never that close to anyone back home to begin with. I don't like most people.
- Meredith: I think that's why I like distracting myself.
- Meredith: When I arrived here, I kind of got obsessed with electronics. Making lights and stuff for the town.
- Meredith: It gives me something to focus on so I don't have to think about everything else I'm missing.
- Meredith: I think it was the same with finding that album.
- Meredith: Urgh. Sorry for being such a... Sorry for being me, I guess.
(Choice between "You don't have to apologize!" and "Hey, don't worry about it!")
- Meredith: Heh. Thanks. For a second, I sounded like Kayleigh there.
- Meredith: Do you know what I mean? She always acts like she's got something to apologize for.
- Meredith: That's enough sincerity.
- Meredith: C'mon, let's finish up here.
Relationship Level 3
- Meredith: The Gramophone café always reminds me of my dad. He'd brew a pot of coffee every morning before heading into London for work, so that coffee smell is kind of seared into my brain.
(Choice between "Sounds nostalgic!" and "That's a nice memory!")
- Meredith: I guess so...
- Meredith: I can never tell if I miss my parents. We never had a huge amount in common. They grew up in a different time and a different place.
- Meredith: I guess there was a big generational divide. It's not my fault my parents listened to incredibly bad music!
- Meredith: When I moved out to go to college, we didn't really stay... in touch. That's OK.
(Choice between "That's sad." and "That sounds kinda lonely.")
- Meredith: I suppose it is.
- Meredith: Y'know, I don't have many strong memories of growing up.
- Meredith: I had friends, and life experiences, but thinking back on those memories...
- Meredith: It always feels like something that was just happening around me, not something I was participating in.
- Meredith: Like I've never been fully in the pilot seat.
- Meredith: I guess I was an uncool kid, then an uncool teenager. As for being an adult...
- Meredith: Well, there's still time to see how I do at this.
- Meredith: Maybe I just need to make more friends whilst I'm here in New Wirral. Urgh.
- Meredith: No-one ever tells you growing up that making friends as an adult is hard.
(Choice between "At least we're friends!" and "What about us?")
- Meredith: It's easier with us - we have, like, a hobby together.
(Choice between "A... hobby?" and "We do?")
- Meredith: Yeah, we're looking for a magic world portal. That's a hobby, right?
- Player: I guess so!
- Meredith: I mean, I hope we'd still hang out... even if we didn't find your doorway.
(Choice between "Of course we would!" and "You're cute when you blush!")
- If chosen "Of course we would!":
- Meredith: Heh. Cool.
- If chosen "You're cute when you blush!":
- Meredith: Urgh, you can't compliment me like that. I totally don't handle it well.
- Meredith: It makes my whole body feel like it's folding in on itself.
- Meredith: Huh, I'm more tired than I thought.
- Meredith: Do you think transforming and battling counts as exercise? I guess it's pretty exhausting.
- Meredith: Anyway, let's go and hang out together and punch monsters and stuff.
Relationship Level 4
- Meredith: Y'know, all that stuff with the vinyl record I was looking for got me thinking.
(Choice between "What about?" and "Go on...")
- Meredith: Well, let me put it this way:
- Meredith: We found an album that had never been recorded in my world, right?
- Meredith: And if there are infinite worlds, then this implies... Infinite albums.
(Choice between "I guess that makes sense!" and "Could that be true?")
- Meredith: So like, when I was a teenager, I was a big fan of this old fantasy author. I was a huge dork.
- Meredith: Every book he wrote wasn't just a story, it was like peering into his mind. His aspirations, his beliefs, his philosophies...
- Meredith: I guess writing a book is like putting a bit of yourself out into the world, forever.
- Meredith: Eventually I read everything he'd ever written when he was alive, and the finality of it stuck with me.
- Meredith: I'd experienced everything he'd ever written. There would never be any more.
- Meredith: I guess that happens to all of us when we die... Eventually, we'll have said everything we'll ever say.
- Meredith: But if there's infinite worlds, then maybe there's an endless list of different books he ended up writing.
- Meredith: And maybe... there's endless versions of us, having endless memories and experiences of their own.
- Meredith: Maybe we never really die, in a sense.
- Meredith: Just something that's been on my mind, is all.
- Meredith: C'mon, shall we go?
Relationship Level 5
- Meredith: OK, are you ready for this?
- Meredith: ...
- Meredith: Movie night. At my place. Are you in?
(Choice between "Sure!" and "Not now.")
- If chosen "Sure!":
- Meredith: Alright, you're gonna love this.
- Meredith: So check this out - the only working movie projector on New Wirral.
- (Choice between "Amazing!" and "How did you get this?!")
- Meredith: It's been one of my many side-hobbies.
- Meredith: It's time I tell you about New Wirral's unspoken curse.
- Meredith: You see this?
- Meredith: It's a video tape. But not just any video tape...
- Meredith: It's a video tape for the 1981 action movie "Blood Puncher".
- Meredith: Hundreds of video tapes have washed up on New Wirral's shores in the time I've been here.
- Meredith: I've collected them.
- Meredith: All of them.
- Meredith: Guess what?
- Meredith: They're Blood Puncher.
- Meredith: Every single tape is Blood Puncher.
- Meredith: It's the only film you can watch in New Wirral.
- Meredith: So guess what we're watching?
- (Choice between "Sounds like my kind of movie!" and "I'm ready to enjoy this ironically!")
- Meredith: That's the spirit.
- Meredith: I wanted to say, thanks for hanging out with me.
- Meredith: I've been pretty miserable on New Wirral, but this is, like, the most fun I've had.
- (Choice between "I'm glad we're friends!" and "Maybe this should be a date?")
- If chosen "I'm glad we're friends!":
- Meredith: Heh. Me too, <player>.
- Meredith: Okay, enough sincerity, mate.
- Meredith: We have an awful movie to watch. I hope you're ready.
- If chosen "Maybe this should be a date?":
- Meredith: ...
- Meredith: Took you long enough to ask.
- Meredith: C'mon, we've literally fused together.
- Meredith: It kinda puts me in your head a bit, y'know? And, like, of course I think you're cute.
- Meredith: Why not? Date night. With a bad movie.
- Meredith: Can we keep things casual? Like, non-committal?
- If the player goes by she/her or they/them pronouns:
- Meredith: I've, uh, only ever been with guys before - so this is also kinda new to me.
- Meredith: I want to hang out with you still...
- Meredith: But I also want to make out with you sometimes.
- Meredith: Anyway, I've seen this movie a million times.
- Meredith: So... we don't have to do much watching.
- If chosen "Not now.":
- Meredith: Boo. Give me a shout when you're up for it. It should be a laugh.
Romance
- Meredith: You haven’t said anything for a while, <player>. Is something bothering you?
(Choice between "I want us to be together." and "Nothing in particular!")
- If chosen "I want us to be together.":
- Meredith: I…
- Meredith: I mean, of course I like you.
- Meredith: I don’t know why you like me, but I like you.
- Meredith: But we’re working towards leaving this world…
- Meredith: If we succeed, we might not stay together. Are you… OK with that?
- (Choice between "I am." and "I think so.")
- Meredith: Screw it. Why not?
- If the player goes by he/him pronouns:
- Meredith: Me, with a serious boyfriend. Sounds weird. Feels right.
- If the player goes by she/her pronouns:
- Meredith: Me, with a serious girlfriend. Sounds weird. Feels right.
- If the player goes by they/them pronouns:
- Meredith: Me, with a serious partner. Sounds weird. Feels right.
- Meredith: It’s always been easier for me to tell myself that I need to be happier with myself before I get into a relationship with someone, but I think the truth is…
- Meredith: I might NEVER be truly confident in who I am. I’m not ever gonna be my perfect self.
- Meredith: But you make me happy, and I'm more whole when I’m with you than I am without.
- Meredith: Th-that’s enough sappiness from me. Oh, and I can’t do cute-talk.
- Meredith: If you’re expecting me to ever call you “honey” or “dear”, you’ve got another thing coming, mate.
- If chosen "Nothing in particular!":
- Meredith: Uh, OK.
Campsite and Gramophone Café Conversations
This section is incomplete. Feel free to add the missing information by editing it.
- Meredith: This might be a bit morbid, but I do sometimes wonder if people from my "previous life" ever think about me.
- Meredith: I picture some old colleagues sitting in a dreary London pub one evening, asking each other: "Whatever happened to Meredith Chen, who disappeared off the face of the earth one day, never to be seen again?"
- Meredith: ...
- Meredith: That actually sounds much more depressing when I say it out loud like that.
- Meredith: Do you remember what you were doing right before you came here?
- Meredith: Like, before you came to New Wirral.
- Meredith: Sometimes I try and remember the exact moment, but I can't...
- Meredith: It's like trying to remember the moment you fall asleep.
- Meredith: I can remember what I was doing around that time, but the exact moment is lost on me.
- Meredith: Weird.
- Meredith: I thought the monsters of New Wirral were creepy enough...
- Meredith: But the "Archangels"? Like the one we fought? They're in a league of their own.
- Meredith: The way it spoke to us was like it was a person. Like, they're as smart as us, right? Maybe smarter.
- Meredith: The fact that there's just giant reality-bending intelligent monsters living in the railway system that apparently lies under the entire island we live on...
- Meredith: Well, I guess I won't sleep easy tonight knowing that.
- Meredith: I wonder...
- Meredith: If we were to find our way back to our homes... Our real homes...
- Meredith: Would all this time have passed there?
- Meredith: Or would we end up back at the moment we left, like all this had happened in the blink of an eye?
- Meredith: The cool thing about The Witch House is that like, three other bands had to disband for them to form.
- Meredith: Procgen fell apart when their bassist left to start his own religion, so vocalist Rob Handsome needed work...
- Meredith: Drummer Linda Steel had just left the punk trio Bad Horses after a record label dispute...
- Meredith: And guitarist Daniel "Safety First" Buttercroft was the only survivor of a tour bus crash which killed the entirety of his band No Seatbelts.
- Meredith: So the stars aligned, mostly through bad circumstances, and they were able to form The Witch House.
- Meredith: It makes me think how small the chances are of that even happening...
- Meredith: I wonder what the probability of the two of us being here, in this moment, must be?
- Meredith: Pretty unlikely, I'd guess.
- Meredith: Have you noticed how Harbourtown provides for everyone, no matter what they bring to the community?
- Meredith: I mean, the locals still have their own problems, sure, but...
- Meredith: No-one is cast out. Everyone kinda contributes what they can, and if you can't? No worries, mate.
- Meredith: It's a kind of lonely society, sure.... but it's not a cruel one.
- Meredith: I can't, uh, exactly say the same for where I'm from.
Campsite
- Meredith: UGH. I think something just crawled on my foot.
- Meredith: Did I ever mention my tolerance for bugs is pretty low?
- Meredith: I'm just going to pretend it was a stray blade of grass and really not think about it.
After discovering Night's Bridge Station
- Meredith: So... do you believe it's true?
(Choice between "Do I believe what?" and "What do you mean?")
- Meredith: That the big gateway you found can take us home?
(Choice between "I have to." and "What other choice do I have?")
- Meredith: I... resigned myself to being here forever. It's a little scary to have to start thinking of a future for myself.
- Meredith: You spoke to Ianthe about the gateway, huh?
- Meredith: If the gateway does in fact work, it's gonna cause a whole lot of work for the rangers.
(Choice between "What do you mean?" and "How come?")
- Meredith: People here are gonna have to shift their entire outlooks. New Wirral won't be this place that traps you forever anymore. It'll be a place some people simply... end up, from time to time.
- Meredith: That's assuming that people will even continue to end up here to begin with.
- Meredith: The rangers are like the caretakers of this community, right? They're gonna have to figure out how to manage this whole logistical change.
- Meredith: I'm glad I'm not one of them. Too much work.
After defeating Aleph Null
- Meredith: So much has happened recently, we haven't even had a chance to talk about our big battle against Aleph.
- Meredith: Like, transforming into monsters with cassette tapes is one thing. Fusing with you and becoming a bigger monster is another. But when we all fused together on top of that train?
- Meredith: That was mental.
- Meredith: I'm not sure how to describe it... like with regular fusion, it felt like taking a backseat view to what my body was doing.
- Meredith: But it wasn't just you and me this time. It was all of us, and I could feel our collective desire.
- Meredith: You know what? Archangels are strong, but people are WAY stronger.
Character Interactions in Gramophone Café
Meredith and Kayleigh
- Meredith: ...I really don’t get it.
- Meredith: What is the “inter net”? Half the people in Harbourtown are crying over how much they miss it!
- Kayleigh: Y’know, the internet? Like on computers, or phones?
- Meredith: On phones? Do you speak to people over it?
- Kayleigh: …What was the current year in your world before you came here, Meredith?
- Meredith: 1989, why do you ask?
- Kayleigh: Oh! OK. I can see we’re maybe a little out of sync with each other.
Meredith and Eugene
- Meredith: ...I did have some engineering work to do back at the shop, but I might just swerve it for now.
- Eugene: Yeah! You gotta take a break sometimes, buddy!
- Eugene: …. Wait, what did you say just now?
- Meredith: Uhh, I said I had some engineering work to do?
- Eugene: What did you say after that…?
- Meredith: ...I was gonna swerve it?
- Eugene: Is that a phrase? To “swerve” something?
- Meredith: Oh, I mean, yeah. Like if you’re going to skip out on doing something or going somewhere, that’s you “swerving” it.
- Eugene: OK, gotcha. I shall embrace your unusual slang with an open mind.
- Meredith: I think I’m gonna swerve this whole conversation.
Meredith and Felix
- Meredith: ...My music tastes?
- Felix: Yeah! What did you used to listen to back in your world?
- Meredith: That’s a broad question. I like bands where all the members hate each other.
- Felix: That’s very specific.
- Meredith: I’m a very specific person.
Meredith and Viola
- Viola: I must confess, dear Meredith, the way in which you fashion yourself is unlike any I have seen before – in my country, and in this one.
- Meredith: I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not.
- Viola: I mean no insult. You seem unconcerned with aligning yourself with the appearance of those around you. It implies a deeper confidence in oneself.
- Viola: I find you rather admirable in that regard, dear Meredith!
- Meredith: Uh, thanks mate.
Meredith and Barkley
- Barkley: Arf!
- Meredith: You like belly rubs, don’t you?
Meredith and Sunny
- Sunny: ...No, I never had to “drink blood” as a Landkeeper...
- Meredith: So you’re not, like, a vampire. But are you sure you aren’t maybe a little bit undead? You look pretty pale.
- Sunny: ”Undead”? I’m not familiar with the word... Is it bad..?
- Meredith: I guess not. I’m just curious about you.
- Sunny: You’re... curious about me...?
- Meredith: Don’t take it the wrong way! You’re like, a living dead girl. Or maybe you’re not. Either way, it’s cool.
- Sunny: So you’re saying you don’t quite understand me, and that interests you...?
- Meredith: I... guess?
Meredith and Frankie
- Frankie: ...I just don’t know, Meredith. If I leave New Wirral, I’m going to have to get a job and all that boring stuff.
- Meredith: You’re just a kid, right? You’ve got some time left before you hit the mundanities of adulthood.
- Frankie: I’m eighteen! I don’t think you’re that much older than me!
- Meredith: Oh. I didn’t realise. I guess you have such a... youthful energy that I mistook you for younger.
- Frankie: I get that a lot!
Here Comes The Sun
(After meeting The Mer-Line)
- Meredith: That didn’t go how I expected.
Magikrab's Gauntlet
(When encountering Meredith)
- Meredith: Well, this is an odd feeling. Time to face myself, I guess.
(When encountering Nowhere Monarch)
- Meredith: Urgh. This thing again.
(When Meredith is on her own)
- Meredith: Oh, great. What have I gotten myself into here?
(When Meredith is the first fighter in a pair)
- Meredith: Alright, I've got a strategy in mind. Here goes: we hit them harder than they hit us. What do you reckon?
(When Meredith is the second fighter in a pair)
- Meredith: Urgh, we're going to lose, aren't we?
