Archangels are a mysterious yet powerful race of eldritch beings that usually stay beneath the Mer-Line stations of New Wirral. Hunting them is necessary to complete Morgante's "Land of Confusion" Quest.

History
According to Kayleigh, when the first people washed up on New Wirral, the term "angels" was given to the monsters, while "Archangels" was given to the eldritch entities due to the term meaning "highest rank of angels". While monsters lost their original "angel" title after it was revealed they could be beaten, "Archangel" still stayed around.

At the end of the game, Aleph reveals that Archangels are egregores created from humanity's desires, such as greed, adventures, wars, even extinction events. In return for giving them life, the Archangels would travel to a random world and act out whatever they were created from, usually bringing untold deviation unto the world, as shown with the Dead World.

After the player and their partners defeat Aleph Null, Ms. Amber mentions that because Archangels are formed from ideas, even if they are killed, they can reform as long as the idea they formed from still persists.

After the player defeats her in battle, Lenna reveals that Archangels can take on a human form.

* Shining Kuneko - An Archangel born from Felix's old drawing of a character he made when he was little, Kuneko, an "angel/demon hybrid raised by ninjas". Wanting revenge for being abandoned due to being perceived as an old shame, Kuneko "unites the four elements inside of her", becoming an Archangel. Defeating her nets you her forms.
Mechanics
Archangels can use multiple moves in a single turn. They will act twice if, after the first move, they have a usable non-damaging move such that the sum of the cost of the two moves is less than or equal to their current AP even if these attacks do not consume their AP.

Archangels are also immune to certain moves, such as AP Steal, Guzzle Fuel, Hypnotise, Snooze Spore, Stony Look, Sticker Trick, and Gasoline Spray but they are not immune to Sleep, Petrified, Booby Trapped, or Flammable.

Angelic Attack
Unlike normal monsters, Archangels will aim to preserve their AP until it reaches 10 AP, upon which they will expend in order to use an "Angelic Attack". These Angelic Attacks destroy walls and are unavoidable.

The list is as follows:

* The use of different art styles for each of the Archangels was inspired by the designs of witches in the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
* Archangels from the time of Aleph's round table (Aleph, Morgante, Gwenivar, and The Amber Lodge) have more "stable" looking designs because they have existed longer and had more time to "solidify"., who appears as one of the potential opponents the player can encounter and battle against in Magikrab's Gauntlet.

After defeating Lenna in Brokenhead, she can be encountered again by the player to battle against in Magikrab's Gauntlet.
The player can potentially encounter Shadow Lenna in Magikrab's Gauntlet after Lenna is defeated in Brokenhead. During these potential fights, Shadow Lenna will be accompanied by Delvin, another character from Lenna's Inception.
* Cat-5 was initially designed as an homage to the Archangel Catsiel, Cat-5 being a cat with a screen on its head similar to Catsiel being a cat with a CRT on its head.
**Additionally, two of the unused monster designs in the Cassete Beasts: Artbook that appear to be earlier designs for Cat-5 have more clear references to Catsiel. One having a television for a head and a power plug for a tail, the other having a screen for it's head (like the final design) but having two TV component cables for tails.
* Pyromeleon's design was based on the Pyromeleon monsters from Lenna's Inception.
* Jumpkin has some similarities to the partner Gourdon in Lenna's Inception. Both are pumpkins that come to life after being sprinkled with a substance (Jumpkin with Skelly Jelly and Gordon with blood). They are both likely inspired in part by Bytten Studio's logo, which features a pumpkin.
* Allseer's design has some similarities with the second phase of Archangel Tentaluchus, both are UFOs with a pyramid on top.
* Scampire's design has some similarities with Archangel Hatasiah, both are flying bats wearing a top hat.
* Archangel Mammon shares its name with the capitalistic-themed character from Lenna's Inception, Chairman Mammon.
{{#spoiler:show=Show Spoiler (Cassette Beasts and Lenna's Inception)|
Both Cassette Beasts and Lenna's Inception feature powerful beings called Archangels. According to Jay Baylis, the "rules" for what makes Archangels are not consistent between the games. Archangels can also be born from other Archangels, for example Mordread was born from Morgante and Aleph. Characters often note that Archangels "look wrong".

In Lenna's Inception, Archangels are powerful beings. It is implied that Lenna was hatched from an egg laid by her parents, began life in a pupa form, and grew up into her adult form. The main 8 Archangels of the game were created by Lenna using the Power of Truth. Lenna has refereed to Archangels as being monsters. Depending on the exact boss order, many of the 8 main Archangels have a second battle phase where they take on a different glitchy form.
Welp, it won't be the Alpha Centaurians finding the 17th book. Last month the spacetime capsule stopped beaming signals home from the Oort cloud. No official word from NASA yet, but amateur astronomers are absolutely going nuts over it!

What they're saying is that signals from the capsule red-shifted away out of view, as if it crossed some kind of event horizon. So it didn't just crash into a rock! What's even weirder is that after it vanished, something much larger blue-shifted into the same spot.
People are calling it the Object, but it's pretty clear now that it's a train... hurtling through space in a cloud of glass shards.

It's arriving at Earth on May 11th... but there's some uncertainty because its speed isn't constant — it's periodically changing speed and direction by jettisoning reflective objects and wooden doors. Weirdly, the total mass of all the objects it has thrown out is more than the object itself could have carried. So just what are we dealing with? A new archangel?
Lenna's Inception is the game Bytten Studio developed before Cassette Beasts. Cassette Beasts has multiple references to characters and events from Lenna's Inception. Lenna's Inception also has several references to aspects of Cassette Beasts.

The Traveling Merchant in Cassette Beasts is implied to be the same Traveling Merchant from Lenna's Inception. He mentions having given his shirt to a woman in need, which is a reference to the item trading side-quest in Lenna's Inception.

{{#spoiler:show=Show Spoiler (Cassette Beasts post-game)|
Lenna appears in Cassette Beasts as a secret optional boss in Brokenhead.

When talking to Lenna in Cassette Beasts, she mentions Paige, who appears as one of the potential opponents the player can encounter and battle against in Magikrab's Gauntlet.

Archangels

An obtainable book called "Diary" (with corrupted letters) discusses an event that is likely lore of Cassette Beasts.

There aren't any clear photos of it yet, but the people who have been studying it have been accused of stockpiling cassette tapes. I'm getting worried...

I'm keeping my Skullbeak tape close. I know it won't help, but it makes me feel better.

This article is part of a series of tutorials intended on teaching the reader how to create their own monster mods for the PC versions of Cassette Beasts. We advise the reader familiarise themselves with the Mod Developer Guide first.

This part will explain how to set up a monster's fusion form.

Step 1: Understanding Fusion Forms
First it is important to understand how "fusion" works in the game engine for Cassette Beasts. Every monster has a fusion config file - a 2D Godot scene file (.tscn) that defines several "parts" and also co-ordinates associated with those parts. When two monster forms fuse in-game, the config for the primary monster is used as a base, but swaps "parts" with the secondary monster's fusion config scene to create a mashup of the two scenes. Finally, the colour palette of this form is created by pulling palette information from both monsters (which will be explained in Part 3).
<gallery widths="584" heights="380">
File:Fusion config 01.png|What the fusion form scene looks like for Bansheep in the editor (click to expand)
</gallery>These parts are defined by nodes, that then have sprites nested within them. If a fusion form doesn't need to display a part (for example, Bansheep's fusion form does not feature legs) then those layers can be hidden in the editor and will not appear on this fusion form. The sprites defined for it, however, can still be used if this monster is the secondary monster in a fusion.

The list of "parts" that must be defined are:

* Body: The fusion form's body. This never swaps, and is always defined by the primary form in a fusion. Should never be hidden.
* Head: The fusion form's head. This is always drawn in roughly the same size so that the "helmet" fits on it without clipping - and mostly round. Should never be hidden.
* HelmetFront & HelmetBack: This is for external details that go over the head - ears, hats, horns, hair, etc. When two different monster species' are fused, the engine will always use the "head" from one and the "helmet" from the other. The "HelmetFront" sprite is for parts that go in front of the head (such as the foreground ear + hair in the above Bansheep example) and the "HelmetBack" sprite goes behind (the background ear for the above example). Should never be hidden.
* Arm_Back & Arm_Front: The fusion form's "arms". Can be hidden for fusion forms that don't have visible arms (such as Traffikrab)
* Tail: The fusion form's tail. Can be hidden.
* BackLeg_Front & BackLeg_Back: The hind legs of a fusion form. If a monster is bipedal (only has two legs) then these should be the legs used. Can be hidden.
* FrontLeg_Front & FrontLeg_Back: The front legs of a fusion form. Can be hidden.

And the list of the co-ordinate nodes that must be placed are:

* attack: This marks the point where attacks "emit" from - and is usually lined up in front of the arms (if the monster has arms) or the "mouth". These don't have to be exactly accurate but it helps.
* hit: Where the "impact" sprite animation will appear when attacked. Generally placed in the front-center mass of the body.
* eye: Some attacks play an animation on a monster's eye (such as Revenge Strike) - this defines where that happens on a fusion form. The eye of the fusion can differ from this placement if the secondary monster's head is used, but don't worry too much about it.
You'll notice that the fusion parts are all in the same three colours! As stated earlier, the palette for the fusion form in-game is pulled from the two monsters that formed it, so all fusion parts are drawn with three colours that are used as follows:
<gallery widths="400" heights="130">
File:Wraithand fusion 05.png|The three colours used for fusion parts (click to expand)
</gallery>
Whilst you don't have to stick to these three colours, other palettes used on the fusion parts will not change colour.

Step 2: Custom Fusion Parts
We can make custom fusion parts using the templates available at the top of this page. Opening one of the template files in Aseprite/Libresprite, you'll see something like this.
<gallery widths="584" heights="380">
File:Wraithand fusion 01.png|The head/helmet template open in Aseprite (click to expand)
</gallery>

You can see in the above image that Fusion parts have the same animation tags as regular monsters - after all, fusion forms can do anything a regular monster can do!
You'll also notice that all the animations are 6 frames long (except for "hurt", which is 3) which keeps all the parts animating in sync with each other.

So let's get designing!
Heads & Helmets
As explained earlier, the "head" is a round sprite that is always broadly the same shape - the round blob that is given as a template in the Template files. You can change the shape of the head slightly, but you'll want to limit how drastically you change it so that it doesn't clip with the "helmet" layers.<gallery widths="300" heights="250">
File:Wraithand fusion 02.png|This shows, roughly, where you are safe to adjust the size of the template head for custom fusion parts
</gallery>Let's sketch a head for Wraithand using this template head. The only feature on its head is its face, which makes this quite straightforward.

<gallery widths=250px heights=250px>
File:wraithand fusion 03.png|A quick sketch to plan the "head" part
File:wraithand fusion 06.png|The finished sprite
</gallery>

Now let's do the same thing for the "helmet" part. This always has a "helmet_front" layer, but can also have a "helmet_back" layer for any elements that you might want to display "behind" the head (for example, an ear). For now, we'll adapt Wraithand's quiff into a helmet sprite that just uses the "helmet_front" layer.

<gallery widths=250px heights=250px>
File:wraithand fusion 04.png|A quick sketch to plan the "helmet" part
File:wraithand fusion 07.png|The finished sprite
</gallery>

Together, both layers will look something like this!

<gallery widths=250px heights=250px>
File:wraithand head.gif|Both the "head" and "helmet" sprites animated together
Jumpkin's name is a portmanteau of "jump" and "pumpkin".

Jumpkin's design and concept has some similarities to the partner Gourdon in Lenna's Inception. Both are pumpkins that come to life after being sprinkled with a substance (Jumpkin with Skelly Jelly and Gordon with blood). They are both likely inspired in part by Bytten Studio's logo, which features a pumpkin.

Jumpkin was designed by artist Sami Briggs.
{{#spoiler:show=Show Spoiler (Cassette Beasts post-game)|
Lenna appears in Cassette Beasts as a secret optional boss in Brokenhead.

When talking to Lenna in Cassette Beasts, she mentions Paige, though Paige does not directly appear in Cassette Beasts.
Archangels

Diary
An obtainable book called "Diary" (with corrupted letters) discusses an event that is likely lore of Cassette Beasts.

There aren't any clear photos of it yet, but the people who have been studying it have been accused of stockpiling cassette tapes. I'm getting worried...

I'm keeping my Skullbeak tape close. I know it won't help, but it makes me feel better.
