'''Experience''' is something that characters and monsters gain upon winning a battle or completing a [[quest]]. Gaining enough experience points can cause characters to increase in level, [[Partners|partners]] to increase in relationship level, and monsters to increase in grade.

== Experience Sources ==
=== Battles ===
When winning a battle, an amount of experience points is earned based on the level, monster form experience yield, and character experience yield of each defeated enemy.

How many experience points a given enemy yields when defeated is determined by the following formulas:

<math>\text{Experience} = \begin{cases}
f(\text{Level}, \text{Form}, \text{Char}) & \text{if Level} \geq 20, \\
f(\text{Level}, \text{Form}, \text{Char}) + \text{floor}\left[\dfrac{f(20, \text{Form}, \text{Char}) - f(\text{Level}, \text{Form}, \text{Char})}{3}\right] & \text{otherwise}
\end{cases}</math>

<math>f(\text{Level}, \text{Form}, \text{Char}) = \text{floor}\left\{ \frac{2(\text{Form}, \text{Char})}{35} \left[\text{floor}\left(\frac{(75 + \text{Level}) \times \text{Level} }{96}\right) + 1\right] \right\}</math>
Fusions will yield experience both when they are unfused and when each of the individual monsters are defeated. When unfused, they will yield the sum of the experience points the two enemies would yield on defeat.
For example, if you defeat a fusion of [[Squirey]] and [[Dominoth]] (Squirenoth) at level 102, it will yield <math>f(102, 40, 80) + f(102, 40, 80) = 1296 + 1296 = 2592</math> experience points when unfusing and the Squirey and Dominoth will both yield an additional <math>f(102, 40, 80) = 1296</math> experience points for a total of 5184 experience points.<!--
=== Quests ===
Each quest has an associated base experience yield <math>\text{Base}</math>, ranging from 0, 50, and 100, and if the quest has an associated location, that location's natural level is used in determining the amount of exp to grant. Otherwise, the level is based on the player level.

<math>\text{Experience} = \begin{cases}
f(\text{Level}, \text{Base}, 0) & \text{if Level} \geq 20, \\
f(\text{Level}, \text{Base}, 0) + \text{floor}\left[\dfrac{f(20, \text{Base}, 0) - f(\text{Level}, \text{Base}, 0)}{3}\right] & \text{otherwise}
\end{cases}</math>

==== Other Mechanics ====
Using a move with the ''+x% Experience'' [[Sticker Attributes|attribute]] will increase the total experience by the specified percentage whenever the move is used. The experience received is given to the entire party, both character and tape, regardless of participation, health, or number of tapes present. For example, upon clearing a battle that rewards 500 experience, both the player and partner (regardless of health) will receive at least that amount, and all tapes in the party (including broken tapes) will receive 500 experience. However, monster tapes will usually only level up once (rarely twice) in a single battle, and any excess experience will be significantly diminished.

== Character Levels ==<!-- exp_gradient = 5 and exp_base_level = 0 so get_exp_to_level in BattleFormulas reduces to (5*level/5)^3 -->

The total amount of experience needed to hit a certain level is just the cube of the level <math>l</math>:

<math>\text{Exp}(l) = l^3, \qquad 0 \leq l \leq 200.</math>

Meanwhile, the amount of experience needed to go to the next level, from level <math>l</math> to <math>l+1</math>, is

<math>\text{Exp}( l+1 ) - \text{Exp}( l ) = 3l(l+1) + 1.</math>

As an example, to get to the maximum level of 200, a total of 8,000,000 experience is needed. To get from level 199 to 200, one must earn 119,401 experience.

If the player is of a higher level compared to the current [[Partner]], the partner will receive boosted experience, which is either double the experience gained <!-- GainExpMenu.gd, line 124: if a character's total exp (like the current partner) is lower than the the highest total exp a character has in the party (like the player), the exp gain is in line 127, min of 2*exp_yield or the exp difference -->or the amount needed to match the player's total experience, whichever is lower. The experience they gain also contributes to their [[Relationship]]. All unlocked non-active partners will receive half of the received experience.

== Monster Grades ==
Even though monster tape grades only show up to five stars (and all associated effect such as the [[Stat]] boost only account for up to 5 stars), they can continue getting experience, and any additional level up past that will generate a random sticker from its move pool.

Prior to version 1.6, tapes can have a grade of 6 or higher even though the tape only displays 5 stars, and as this grade goes higher, more experience is required to hit the next grade. For example, getting from a grade of 5 to 6 (both 5 stars) requires less experience than leveling from grade 6 to 7 (still both 5 stars). Starting in version 1.6, once the tape is at 5 stars, the amount of experience needed to level it up again is now the same regardless of how many times it has been leveled up before.

The amount of experience needed to reach a certain grade is given by

<math>\text{Exp}(\text{Grade}) = \text{floor} \left( g\times \frac{\text{Grade}}{5} + b \right)^3</math>

where both <math>g</math> (level gradient) and <math>b</math> (base level) are species-specific parameters that alter the shape of this curve. There are generally six classes of experience curves, each one associated with a pair of <math>(g,b)</math> values:

* <math>g = 14</math>, <math>b = 0</math>: for the first of a 3-form remaster sequence, like [[Carniviper]]
* <math>g = 14</math>, <math>b = 14</math>: for the second of a 3-form remaster sequence, like [[Masquerattle]]
* <math>g = 14</math>, <math>b = 28</math>: for the last of a 3-form remaster sequence, like [[Jormungold]]
* <math>g = 21</math>, <math>b = 0</math>: for the first of a 2-form remaster sequence, like [[Pombomb]]
* <math>g = 21</math>, <math>b = 21</math>: for the last of a 2-form remaster sequence, like [[Spitzfyre]]
* <math>g = 42</math>, <math>b = 0</math>: for monsters that don't remaster, like [[Jellyton]]
[[File:Monster Exp Curves.png|center|600x600px]]
For the three classes of curves associated with fully remastered species or monsters that don't remaster, they all require the same experience to hit 5 stars, at 74088 experience. Once at 5 stars, the amount of experience needed to level up again is simply <math>\text{Exp}(6) - \text{Exp}(5)</math>.{{Mechanics}}
Allseer's name is likely a reference to the term "all-seeing", which describes a being that is able to see or detect all things that are currently happening (ex. a deity or surveillance system).<ref name="all-seeing-merriam-webster" />

Allseer's design has some similarities with the second phase of Archangel Tentaluchus in ''[[Lenna's Inception]]'', both are UFOs with a pyramid on top. For both, the pyramid is likely a reference to the [[wikipedia:Eye of Providence|Eye of Providence]].
=== Other ===
* In Eastham Woods, an NPC called "Soldier" has an Allseer. They ask for how to find Rendlesham forest, which is likely a reference to the [[wikipedia:Rendlesham Forest Incident|Rendlesham Forest Incident]] in Suffolk, UK, where UFOs were supposedly sighted.
[[File:Archangel Catsiel (Lennas Inception).png|thumb|250px|Archangel Catsiel from ''Lenna's Inception'']]
Cat-5's name is a compound of "Cat" and the number "5". "[[wikipedia:Cat|Cat]]" means an animal of the family Felidae, and "5" could be a reference to the LAN/ethernet cable called [[wikipedia:Category 5 cable|CAT-5]]. Cat-5's name may also be a joke if written in Roman Numerals, where it is written out as Cat V (Cat TV).

Cat-5 was initially designed as an homage to the Archangel Catsiel from ''[[Lenna's Inception]]'', Cat-5 being a cat with a screen on its head similar to Catsiel being a cat with a CRT on its head.<ref>"Cat-5 was designed very early on as a sort of homage to a boss monster from Bytten Studio’s previous game, Lenna's Inception. The game featured a cat with a television for a head, and Cat-5 is kind of carrying on that tradition!" - Cassette Beasts: Artbook, page 8.</ref>

Additionally, two of the unused monster designs in the ''Cassete Beasts: Artbook'' that appear to be earlier designs for Cat-5 have more clear references to Catsiel. One has a television for a head and a power plug for a tail; the other has a screen for its head (like the final design) but has two TV component cables for tails.<ref>{{CiteArtBook|page=30}}</ref>
AN UNBLEMISHED TIMELINE, ALREADY ON A PATH TOWARDS DESTRUCTION.

WHAT A MARVELLOUS PLAYTHING IT SHALL BE.

-Aleph Null, before the fight.</blockquote>Eternal War Incarnate, '''Aleph Null''', is A15 of the [[Archangel|Archangels]] being the [[Fusion|fusion]] of Archangel [[Aleph]] with Archangels [[Poppetox]], [[Mourningstar]], [[Nowhere Monarch]], [[Heckahedron]], [[Alice]], [[Robin Goodfellow]], [[Mammon]], [[Lamento Mori]], and [[Babelith]]. Serves as the final boss of the game.

== Ingame Bio ==
Aleph, once again as strong as he was at the height of his power. If he is allowed to roam the connected cosmos as he once did, it is no doubt that an unquestionable amount of suffering will happen.

The legends written after Aleph's 6th-century stint as British monarch claim that he will one day return to take back his throne. Although he was defeated this time, if humans keep finding ways to kill each other, he will eventually succeed.

== History ==
After being intrigued by the player's power of Fusion, Aleph decides to use it himself with the rest of his team as a form of "team building exercise". After becoming Aleph Null, the Archangel takes back his previous offer of leaving the player's world alone, deciding to travel there first to cause misery to the "unblemished timeline". In response, the player's allies all jump on board the train the Archangels were using and help to battle the fusion.

Halfway through the fight, Aleph destroys the player's cassette player and mocks them as being only human. As all hope seems lost, [[Morgante]] reveals that the power of fusion is something that humans innately possess, which motivates the player to get back up and merge with all their allies, creating the [[Morgante Gestalt]] due to Morgante's essence still inside them. With this new form, Aleph Null is defeated, and as he dies, he realizes the power of humans.

== Habitats ==
Can be located and fought in [[Night's Bridge Station]], after fighting [[Aleph]]. Can only be fought once per save file.

== Stats ==
{{ArchangelStats|max_hp=1200|melee_attack=200|melee_defense=200|ranged_attack=200|ranged_defense=200|speed=100}}
== Mechanics ==
Being able to use any move, Aleph Null is capable of using some of the most powerful stickers in the game, resulting in various devastating attacks. This includes moves that would usually be exclusive to certain kinds of monsters. At 10 AP, Aleph Null will randomly use an available Angelic attack, which comes from Aleph and any other Archangel that were part of Aleph Null.

To mitigate this, all of the [[Partner|partners]] the player has met and reached 1 level of [[Relationship]] with will fight alongside them and their current partner as NPC allies.

During the first part of the battle, Aleph Null will automatically heal back to half health if his health goes drops below 50% HP.

=== Moves ===

* [[Eldritch]]
* [[Neutralise]]
* [[Status Resistance]]
* [[Phase Shift]]
* Any Angelic attack from Archangels that were part of the fusion
* Any non-passive move in the game that has a power above 0, though it must cost equal to or less than than his current amount of AP

=== Special Moves ===

Aleph Null can use any [[Angelic Attack]]s that his components can.
== Trivia ==
=== Design ===
Aleph Null's design is combines parts of each of the different Archangels it is comprised of:

* [[Aleph]]'s triangle head, red coat, and Deus Ex Calibur sword
* [[Poppetox]]'s top hat
* [[Mourningstar]]'s wing
* [[Nowhere Monarch]]'s striped tentacle (as a tail)
* [[Heckahedron]]'s shapes (as arm decorations)
* [[Alice]]'s cloth pattern
* [[Robin Goodfellow]]'s head (as a shoulder guard)
* [[Mammon]]'s human-like half face (as half of their vest)
* [[Lamento Mori]]'s bone arm/leg
* [[Babelith]]'s crown and moon

Aleph Null's appearance is based on which Archangels you have defeated. For example, if you have not beaten [[Babelith]], his crown and moon will not appear on Aleph Null's design.<ref name="berry" />
'''Night's Bridge Station''' is the final [[Mer-Line station]] in the main story of the game. Its exact location is randomly decided, and it can only be accessed after following a randomly generated set of clues given by [[Land of Confusion]]. It has a distinct aesthetic compared to the other stations, with a white-and-blue colour palette.

== Location ==
To access the station, the player must perform the instructions in [[Morgante]]'s song, which is obtained by completing [[Land of Confusion]]. Technically, the station can be opened before the actions to do so are revealed in-game, but both the location of the station entrance and the action the player must perform to open it are randomised.

The mirror to Night's Bridge Station cannot be entered if your [[Partner]] does not have Relationship levels. Trying to fast travel inside with them will automatically set [[Kayleigh]] as your partner; it also cannot be entered if the player has avoided talking to [[Aleph]] the entire game.
== Description ==
This station is comprised of a grandiose walkway out of the mirror, a main lobby and two vast rooms off to the right and left. Platform B is sealed off, and is opened by inserting an "Azure Keystone" item into two nearby sword statues. Each side path contains one Keystone that is guarded by a difficult [[Rogue Fusion]]. After Platform B is opened, approaching gives players a warning asking if they are ready to proceed towards [[Aleph]].

=== Right Room ===
Narrow walkways with monsters and green switches span across this room. Most switches raise platforms, while one spins a clock for reaching a notably tricky loot cache. The player battles a Kingnyx ([[Kingrave]] and [[Queenyx]]) Rogue Fusion at the far southeast end to claim an Azure Keystone.

=== Left Room ===
This room is similar in appearance, though with magnetic floor switches and some one-way platforming with Glide. A magnetic block at the far end will be used on the switches to raise platforms. Backtrack with the cube to the first switch and power it to proceed, where a large coffin will be found.

{{#spoiler:[[Morgante]] will appear in a short cutscene examining the coffin, giving a brief statement about [[Mordread]] having justice before she vanishes.}}

Upon the cutscene ending, the player may climb the nearby stairs and battle a Smogtess ([[Smogmagog]] and [[Fountess]]) fusion for an Azure Keystone.
Mourningtown used to be a relatively normal settlement with a few communal lifestyle practices, but under the leadership of [[Dorian]], it gradually transformed into the heavily fortified outpost it is now. From inside it, Dorian leads an apocalyptic cult based around summoning the archangel [[Mourningstar]], whom he refers to as the Serpent God. Mourningtown's citizens have been taught to become very distrustful of outsiders, attacking them on sight, and refusing to let anyone inside.
The Red King of Conquest, '''Aleph''', is A14 of the [[Archangel|Archangels]], being a man in a red coat and a cane with a floating triangle mirror for a head. He is the main antagonist of the game, being the one who initially defeated [[Morgante]] and recruits the Archangels of New Wirral to escape the island and cause chaos across reality.

== In-game Bio ==
Aleph once lead a troupe of Archangels across the connected cosmos. There, he commanded great battles, becoming a part of many common legends known to this very day. His portal head allows him to send anyone and anything anywhere he wants — except himself.

The incarnation of conquest, Aleph was born from mankind's warlike nature and desire to conquer. He once led a troupe of Archangels, including Morgante, Ms. Amber, Mordread, and more, which he called his "round table". Of that alliance, only he and Morgante now remain on New Wirral.

== History ==
He is first seen rising from the ground, opening the way to [[Harbourtown Station]]. He is later seen recruiting Archangels that the player has defeated, becoming more and more interested in the player before leaving. After the player defeats 4 Archangels (not counting [[Shining Kuneko]]), he shows up in the middle of [[Harbourtown]] to introduce himself and requests the player to stop interfering with his recruitment, using his portal head to teleport the player to a [[Dead World|dead world]] to get rid of them after saying they wish to "leave" New Wirral.

When the player returns to New Wirral thanks to [[Amber Lodge|Ms. Amber]] and eventually finds a way to [[Night's Bridge Station]], Aleph follows them to the doorway to leave New Wirral, where he will then reveal his new "team" and the true nature of [[Archangel]]s, stating that his goal is to leave New Wirral with his new team with the intent to spread misery across worlds. Aleph proposes a deal with the player that involves letting Aleph and his team leave in exchange for never visiting the player and their partners' worlds.<ref>"IN FACT, I'LL MAKE YOU A DEAL! WE CAN ALL GO OUR SEPARATE WAYS, AND WE'LL NEVER VISIT ANY OF YOUR WORLDS. YOU'LL NEVER SEE US AGAIN. WHAT DO YOU SAY?" - Aleph</ref> After the player rejects his offer, Aleph grows hostile and initiates a fight. After losing, he and his team begin to escape onto the train they arrived at, causing the player's own team to follow and stop him. Intrigued by the player's ability to use "[[fusion]]", Aleph performs the same trick with his team, becoming [[Aleph Null|something more]]…
Aleph will assail players with powerful attacks while changing his type constantly with [[Prismatic]] to keep the fight unpredictable. He also uses moves like [[Sharpen]] as part of his turn to enhance his melee Special Moves, and [[Sharp Edges]] to add more elemental damage on-contact. Be warned: an attack-boosted "Deux Ex Calibur" can fully KO an unprotected tape or party member with ease.

Aleph's concept is inspired by King Arthur from Arthurian legends.<ref>"Morgante and Aleph came from Arthurian legends, but we wanted to put an unusual twist on it rather than dredge up the tired (and problematic) fantasy trope of the 'rightful king'. Since King Arthur in some ways represents Britain, we felt it fair that our version of him reflected Britain's history of conquest." - u/tcoxon (Tom Coxon). "[AMA] We are Bytten Studio, the developers of Cassette Beasts, a monster-recording open world RPG! '''Archangels''' are a mysterious yet powerful race of eldritch beings that usually stay beneath the [[Mer-Line station|Mer-Line stations]] of [[New Wirral]]. Hunting them is necessary to complete Morgante's "[[Land of Confusion]]" Quest.

== History ==
According to Kayleigh, when the first people washed up on [[New Wirral]], the term "angels" was given to the [[monsters]], while "Archangels" was given to the eldritch entities due to the term meaning "highest rank of angels". While monsters lost their original "angel" title after it was revealed they could be beaten, "Archangel" still stayed around.<ref>"Archangels... Supposedly, when the first unlucky sods washed up on the shores of New Wirral, they thought the monsters here were angels. And, and some of them wrote of other entities too, greater than the others... Creatures that look and feel "wrong". Logically, they called these other creatures "Archangels" - the highest ranking among the order of angels. Of course, when people learned they could fight and defeat the regular monsters, they lost their "angelic allure". They've had a bunch of names over the years - angels, demons, devils, ghouls... We just call them monsters now. It's a good catch-all term. Those other creatures, though... Like the one we fought... They're still Archangels to us. We don't know what they are." - Kayleigh</ref>

At the end of the game, Aleph reveals that Archangels are [[wikipedia:Egregore|egregores]] created from humanity's desires, such as greed, adventures, wars, even extinction events. In return for giving them life, the Archangels would travel to a random world and act out whatever they were created from, usually bringing untold deviation unto the world, as shown with the [[Dead World]].<ref>"MY OLD CREW AND I HAD SOMETHING OF AN ARRANGEMENT WITH YOUR LOT. A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP. EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW IT. I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR YOU HUMANS! WITHOUT YOU WE WOULDN'T EXIST! YOU HUMANS LIVE ON YOUR LITTLE WORLDS AND YOU INVENT ALL THESE CUTE IDEAS. LOVE, DEATH, WHATEVER... YOUR MOST POWERFUL THOUGHTS WOULD BRING US TO LIFE, AND IN RETURN WE'D TRAVEL TO YOUR WORLDS TO ACT OUT WHATEVER FANTASIES YOU CONCOCTED FOR US! ADVENTURES... WARS... EXTINCTION EVENTS... YOU PEOPLE LOVE THAT STUFF THE MOST, AND SO DO I!" - Aleph</ref>

After the player and their partners defeat [[Aleph Null]], [[Ms. Amber]] mentions that because Archangels are formed from ideas, even if they are killed, they can reform as long as the idea they formed from still persists.<ref>"Folks like Aleph and I ain't flesh and blood, sugar. It takes an idea to die for us not to be able to come back in some form. He runs on conquest. If you humans keep findin' ways to kill each other, I'm sure he'll reform eventually. Though he might be out of action for quite some time..." - Ms. Amber</ref>

After the player defeats her in battle, [[Lenna]] reveals that Archangels can take on a human form.<ref>"I am [an Archangel]. Well, I used to be. I guess I still am. It's a long story. I'm living as a human now, though. ... Why not? We're not bound by our origins - it doesn't matter who we used to be, it only matters who we choose to be in the present." - Lenna</ref>

== Trivia ==
* The use of different art styles for each of the Archangels was inspired by the designs of witches in the anime [[wikipedia:Puella Magi Madoka Magica|Puella Magi Madoka Magica]].<ref name="discord-jay-madoka" /><ref name="discord-tom-madoka" />
* Archangels from the time of Aleph's round table ([[Aleph]], [[Morgante]], [[Gwenivar]], and [[The Amber Lodge]]) have more "stable" looking designs because they have existed longer and had more time to "solidify".<ref>"yep the intention is that the "round table" Archangels (from Aleph's generation) are a lot more "stable" visually, because they've existed for longer and had more time to "solidify" so to speak" - samuri (Jay Baylis).

== History ==

These archangels are encountered by the player in the DLC [[Pier of the Unknown]].

Technically [[Pearl]], [[Raven]], and [[Rose]] are [[Infernal Engine|infernal engines]] and not Archangels. However, they are listed as Archangels in the [[bestiary]].
* [[Shining Kuneko]] - An Archangel born from Felix's old drawing of a character he made when he was little, [[Kuneko]], an "angel/demon hybrid raised by ninjas". Wanting revenge for being abandoned due to being perceived as an old shame, Kuneko "unites the four elements inside of her", becoming an Archangel. Defeating her nets you her forms. Is associated with [[Felix|Felix's]] "[[Don't You Want Me]]" quest.
* Mordread - An Archangel mentioned by Morgante, child of the Witch and Aleph. Is dead by the time of the game with a casket within [[Night's Bridge Station]] acting as his grave, and it is confirmed by [[Gwenivar]] that it was by Aleph's hands.<ref name="gwen-mordread" /> His story is revealed during an encounter with The Mer-line in the "Here Comes The Sun" quest.
===Angelic Attack===
Unlike normal monsters, Archangels will aim to preserve their AP until it reaches 10 stacks, upon which they will expend it in an "Angelic Attack". The list is as follows:

'''Recording''' is the process of producing new monster tapes from wild [[Monsters]].

== Story ==
{{IncompleteSection}}

==Mechanics Overview==
During battle, the player or partner can choose to consume a [[Tape]] item and record a wild enemy monster. At the start of the turn, the recording character will transform out of their tape and start the recording process. During this time, the target monster cannot be defeated and will always survive with at least 1 HP. Any damage dealt on the target during this term boosts the recording rate, while any damage received by the recorder will drop the recording rate. If successful, the monster takes (5% of Max HP + 1) damage, and cannot be recorded again.

The record rate also depends on the percentage of health the target monster has remaining, and the species' base record rate. Additionally, [[Bootleg|Bootlegs]] have a lower base record rate compared to the regular counterparts. The record rate can be improved by using tapes with better capture rate and by purchasing the Microphone Upgrade and Recording Mod from [[Town Hall#Wilma|Town Hall]].

Care must be taken, however, as switching tapes will take place before recording, which can prematurely defeat the target monster. Certain moves that take place at the end of the turn, such as [[Roll Again]] and stickers with the Chance to use at the end of the round [[Sticker Attributes|attribute]] will take place after a recording success or fail, so the target monster could also be defeated before you can have the opportunity to try again next turn. Additionally, because the recording character will be untransformed while recording, they are vulnerable from taking overspill damage and may take lethal damage while recording.

===Status Interactions===
<!-- `FighterNode.gd`, line 134 checks if the user has been put to sleep via the "sleep" status tag (there are also video records of this happening) -->If the recording character is inflicted with the [[Sleep]] status effect, the recording attempt will fail. If the target monster is affected by a coating, it will affect the multipliers on elemental tapes. Status effects that deal damage, such as [[Burned]] or [[Conductive]], will also update the record rate whenever damage is applied. The target monster will also survive if [[Gambit (status effect)|Gambit]] or [[Ghostly]] expires or if [[Resonance]] overload activates while being recorded.

==Record Rate Formula==
<!-- `Recording.gd`, line 196 (`get_capture_chance`); `BattleFormulas.gd`, line 101 -->
Both the [[Optical Laser Tape]] and [[Black Shuck's Tape]] skip the record rate formula entirely and will record the target without fail.

The record rate is a decimal number between 0 and 1, and constantly gets updated whenever the target or the recorder takes damage, or when the target changes type from coatings. After most actions have been completed, a random decimal between 0 and 1 is generated, and the recording is successful if this is less than <math>\text{RecordRate}</math>.

<math>\text{RecordRate} = \frac{\text{DamageBonus} \times \text{HPBonus} \times \text{LevelBonus} \times \text{SpeciesRate} \times \text{TapeRate} \times \text{UpgradeBonus} }{10000}</math>

There are six major components that contribute to record rate:

*<math>\text{DamageBonus}</math>, which is based on the damage dealt to the target and received by the recorder,
*<math>\text{HPBonus}</math>, which increases if target monster is at a lower HP,
*<math>\text{LevelBonus}</math>, which scales based on the target's level,
*<math>\text{SpeciesRate}</math>, which is the base record rate of the species and is affected by whether or not it's a bootleg,
*<math>\text{TapeRate}</math>, which is the multiplier from the tape used, and
*<math>\text{UpgradeBonus}</math>, which are multipliers from the Microphone Upgrade and Recording Mod if present.

===DamageBonus===
{{IncompleteSection}}
Let <math>d</math> be the damage dealt to the target monster, and <math>r</math> be the damage taken by the recording character.

<math>\text{DamageBonus} = \begin{cases}
\displaystyle \frac{d-r-200}{4(d-r)-200}, & d < r, \\ \\
\displaystyle \frac{4(d-r) + 200}{4(d-r)+200}, & d > r.
\end{cases}</math>

Generally, <math>\text{DamageBonus} < 1</math> if <math>d < r</math> (the recorder takes more damage compared to the monster) and <math>\text{DamageBonus} > 1</math>if <math>d > r</math> (the monster takes more damage compared to the recorder). This function has asymptotes at 1/4 and 4, meaning that it effectively gets capped to within the range <math>1/4 < \text{DamageBonus} < 4</math>, regardless of how much damage has been dealt or received. Both <math>d</math> and <math>r</math> here are unaffected by any kind of healing.

===HPBonus===
<math>\text{HPBonus} = 1 - \frac{2}{3} \frac{\text{HP}}{\text{MaxHP}}</math>

The HP is based on the target monster's HP. The lower the % HP, the larger the multiplier. <math>\text{HPBonus}</math> is equal to 1/3 if the target is at full HP, and is approximately 1 if the target has almost no HP left.

===LevelBonus===
{{IncompleteSection}}
<math>\text{LevelBonus} = \frac{1}{6} \left\{ \frac{20}{\max(\text{MonsterLevel, 30)} } + 5 \right\} \approx \frac{3.333}{\max(\text{MonsterLevel, 30)}} + 0.833</math>

This means that lower-level monsters are comparatively easier to record, while its effects cap out starting at Level 30. Examining the limiting cases for this function, <math>0.944 \leq \text{LevelBonus} \leq 4.167</math>, where the lower bound of 0.944 applies to monsters Level 30 and above, while the upper bound of 4.167 applies to monsters at Level 1. This multiplier is equal to 1 if the monster is at Level 20.

===SpeciesRate===
This term is based on the species' base record rate that roughly corresponds to the species' rarity. Known values for the base record rate are 50, 40, 30, 25, 15, 3, and 1. The higher the base record rate, the easier it is to record. As an example, [[Traffikrab]] has a base record rate of 50, [[Weevilite]] has a base record rate of 25, [[Sirenade]] has a base record rate of 15, and most [[Static encounter|Static encounters]] have a base record rate of 3.

The <math>\text{SpeciesRate}</math> is usually equal to the base record rate, but is approximately halved if the monster is a bootleg. Mathematically,

<math>\text{SpeciesRate} = \begin{cases}
\displaystyle \text{floor}\left(\frac{\text{BaseRecordRate}}{2}\right) + 1, & \text{if target is bootleg}, \\
\text{BaseRecordRate} & \text{otherwise}.
\end{cases}</math>

===TapeRate===
{{Main|Tape}}
Each tape has an associated capture rate multiplier; for [[Basic Tape]] this is 1, for [[Chrome Tape]] it is 3.5, and for the elemental tapes it is set to 4.5 if the element matches the target's type (which is affected by coatings) and is 1.5 otherwise. Tapes that guarantee success, such as the [[Optical Laser Tape]] and [[Black Shuck's Tape]], bypass the entire record rate formula entirely.

=== UpgradeBonus ===
This is affected by the amount of Microphone Upgrade and Recording Mod upgrades bought, with the latter only contributing to <math>\text{UpgradeBonus}</math> if the fusion meter is full.

<math>\text{UpgradeBonus} = \left(1 + \frac{\text{MicrophoneUpgradeAmount} }{20}\right) \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{RecordingModAmount} }{20}\right)</math>

Both upgrades can be bought 5 times, giving a maximum of value of 1.25 (or 25% increase) each, so with both max upgrades and a full fusion meter this results in an effective multiplier of 1.5625 (or 56.25% increase) compared to not having any upgrades.
